Terms:

 

statistics:  the art and science of learning from data

 

data analysis:  using statistical methods to investigate data

 

data set:   a collection of data 

 

four-step process for data analysis: 

 

1. Defining the problem
2. Collecting the data
3. Analyzing the data
4. Reporting the results

 

dot plot:  a chart consisting of group of data points plotted on a scale 

  

skewness:  pulled in one direction (left or right) 

 

outlier:  an extreme deviation from the mean

   

shape:  the form that a distribution takes

 

center:  the mean and median of a distribution

 

spread:  the variability of a distribution
