Many people
have expressed interest in contributing to improvements at Macomb. Belinda Gee, the D.C. Park and Recreation Department employee who runs Macomb now, has prepared a list of the following immediate needs:
- Portable mini tennis net.
- Tennis
rackets.
- Tennis balls.
- Hula hoops.
- 12 baseball gloves.
- 2 portable
basketball hoops for kids under 5.
- 2 retractable soccer goals for free
play.
Please let me know if you can bring or want to purchase any of the above items for Macomb. For longer term needs, we have
spoken with the neighborhood support group, Renovations of Macomb Park (ROMP),
which is a committee of the Cleveland Park Historical Society (CPHS). Among the
projects under consideration are:
- New woodchips for playground.
- Repair, touch up paint on, and remove
mold on gazebo.
- Repair or replace the spider web, which
is starting to fray.
- Purchase new computers (and possibly
other items) for the rec center.
- Purchase and install covered dugouts for
baseball field.
- Rec center remodel.
- Funding for additional rec center
programming/staff.
- Identify a productive and fun use of the
concrete slab in the lower playground.
It will
take some time to settle on priorities. However, you can make tax-deductible
donations now payable to "CPHS-ROMP." Mail with the attached form indicating you are part of the 2008 Macomb Reunion group to:
Leah Thayer CPHS - ROMP P.O. Box 4862 Washington,
DC 20008
We will let you know how the funds will
be applied once the plans are finalized.
We are also investigating how people can donate to park improvements in less affluent parts of Washington. The District of Columbia government does not have an easy mechanism for this purpose. As soon as we identify the proper channel, we will advise you.
