I am a professor of philosophy at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

My research is concentrated in the philosophy of language. My research thus far has concentrated on the semantics of modals and conditionals. I also have interests in such subjects as assertion, communication, vagueness, modal logic, and essentialism. At present I am working on some topics about counterpart theory and de re modality both in metaphysics and in the philosophy of language.
