BRITISH HISTORY ONLINE
"...
British History Online is the digital library containing some of the core printed primary and secondary sources for the medieval and modern history of the British Isles.  Created by the Institute of Historical Research and the History of Parliament Trust, we aim to support academic and personal users around the world in their learning, teaching and research..."

FreeCEN   UK CENSUS ONLINE
From 1841 to 1891 inclusive.  Free to search and view but like the FreeBMD site above, is not 100% complete and does not hold the original records.  It's being added to all the time and you might strike it lucky.

HAT WORKS
Hat Works is the United Kingdom’s only museum dedicated solely to the hatting industry, hats and headwear.
The museum was developed as a lottery-funded regeneration project in Stockport, one of Manchester's leading hatting towns.

HISTPOP   THE ONLINE HISTORICAL POPULATION REPORTS WEBSITE
"...The Online Historical Population (OHPR) collection provides online access to the complete British population report for Britain and Ireland from 1801 to 1937..."

THE ORIGINS NETWORK  $
I found this site useful for its marriage indexes.  As at 2008 the cost for access to both British and Irish records is around $NZ26 for one month's subscription.  Just British or just Irish access is slightly cheaper.

TRACING YOUR BRITISH ANCESTORS - A BEGINNER'S GUIDE
From the LostCousins site this guide in PDF format gives practical information on tracing your ancestors from Britain.

UKBDM   Recommended
"...
This site provides 1,251 links to web sites that offer on-line transcriptions of UK births, marriages, deaths and censuses.  A wide range of other indexes and transcriptions are also available for most counties, these may include parish records, wills, monumental inscriptions etc..."

UK & IRELAND GENEALOGY (GENUKI)
A great website with information on counties, parishes, maps etc.   Loads of information.

UK NAMES
A free to join site where researchers log the UK names they are researching; over 58,000 surnames as at October 2008.  If you find a surname and district you're researching, just click on the contributor's linked name and you can easily send them an email.  Many have links to their own websites.

VILLAGES IN THE UNITED KINGDOM
"...This site is now widely recognised as the national and local community website for the UK, providing a fully interactive home page and tailored portal for over 31,765 villages, towns, cities and suburbs in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland..."

 ENGLAND

EAST KENT WILLS & PROBATE RECORDS  1396 - 1858
For those with ancestors in Kent, England.  Listing will show names, location and the all-important reference.

ENGLAND FAMILY HISTORY & GENEALOGY  Partly $
A website created by Price & Associates, who offer professional genealogy and family history services.  You don't have to use their services but their site contains many interesting and useful links, both free and paying, e.g. old occupation names, directories, mining indexes etc.  Definitely worth a look.

FreeBMD   BIRTHS, MARRIAGES & DEATHS, ENGLAND   Recommended
For records from 1837 onwards.  Free to search and view, this site does not show original records, only transcriptions.  It does not hold 100% of records (it's a work in progress) but you may just find your ancestor so it's worth looking.  A birth search shows the index only, which does not give the parents' names.  On the upside, if you don't know a woman's maiden name but have her first name, her husband's full name and the date of marriage, sometimes you find the wife's maiden name.

HISTORICAL DIRECTORIES
"Historical Directories is a digital library of local and trade directories for England and Wales, from 1750 to 1919.  It contains high quality reproductions of comparatively rare books, essential tools for research into local and genealogical history..."

KENT GEN WEB
A fairly new website for researchers of Kent ancestors.  If you ask the webmaster nicely, she will include your family pages on the site.

OLD HISTORIC FAMILIES OF LANCASHIRE, CHESHIRE & NORTH-WESTERN ENGLAND
"
Many of the old families of Greater Manchester, Lancashire and Cheshire can trace their ancestries back to the Norman conquest of 1066 or earlier.  Their names effectively echo the long history of the region and are remembered today in districts and townships whose streets and placenames record their passing..."

ONLINE PARISH CLERKS (A list of)
"...An Online Parish Clerk (OPC) researches all the available historical data they can find on a parish, records are transcribed, and in order to promote further private research, are made FREELY available to any researcher.  This will include census, parish transcripts, bishop's transcripts and church wardens accounts, overseers accounts, land tax records, postal directory extracts, church & village histories, etc.  An OPC is a volunteer and should not be confused with the civil Parish Clerk appointed by a Parish Council..."

ONLINE PARISH CLERKS (CORNWALL)

ONLINE PARISH CLERKS (KENT)

ONLINE PARISH CLERKS (LANCASHIRE)  Recommended
Brilliant site with transcriptions of baptisms, marriages & burials, some going back to the 1500's.  Can be searched by parish or by name(s).

ONLINE PARISH CLERKS (SUSSEX)

ORDERING ENGLISH BIRTH, MARRIAGE AND DEATH CERTIFICATES  General Register Office (GRO)  $
Not a site to use if looking for proof of an event but the place to go to order English certificates from 1837 onwards.
NOTE: If you don't have the complete date of the event, their website will not accept your order and you'll need to call England and order over the 'phone (the operators are lovely).  They do their best to hide their telephone number: it's not under "Contact us" as you'd expect and finding it is so convoluted I've saved you the trouble:
44 (0)845 603 7788.  Remember the twelve-hour time difference; you can expect to wait in a queue until your call is answered.  As at 2008 marriage certificates cost around $NZ29 and delivery can take up to three weeks.

PARISH THE THOUGHT
  Recommended
Transcriptions of early English births, marriages, weddings and burials (mainly Lancashire).
NOTE: Links open in Word format and your anti-virus system might tell you it's a danger.

SOUTH DERBYSHIRE BDM
  Recommended
This is a great site because if you find your ancestors in the marriage search, it will show you a copy of a parish marriage record with all the parental and spousal information.

SPINNING THE WEB
"...Spinning the Web brings together for the first time a unique collection of some 20,000 items from the libraries, museums and archives of North West England which tell the story of the Lancashire cotton industry..."
Includes a National Roll of the Great War - a book listing men from Manchester who fought in WW1.

THE OLD BAILEY ON-LINE, 1674 - 1913
"...A fully-searchable on-line edition of the largest body of texts detailing the lives of ordinary people, containing accounts of thousands of criminal trials
..."

WIRKSWORTH PARISH RECORDS 1600 - 1900
"...The Genealogy and Local History of the Wirksworth Area, Derbyshire, England from 1600 to 1900 listing 420,000+ original records...".  Includes a snippet on sending a letter in 1808.

 IRELAND

ALL ABOUT IRELAND
Ireland facts and history by Jack Gallagher.

CENSUS OF ANTRIM, IRELAND, 1911   Recommended
Very user-friendly searchable database of the 1911 County Antrim census.  You can search by place, surname or forename.  Original census returns viewable/downloadable in PDF format.

CONNORS GENEALOGY
Pat Connor's American-based site for Irish research.  Tithe applotments, Griffith's valuations, photos, etc.

EMERALD ANCESTORS  $
If you're searching for your Northern Irish ancestors, this site isn't bad.  You can search for names but must pay a specified time subscription to see the full detail.  As at 2008 it's around $NZ26 for one month, so it's not the cheapest for its limited records.

IRISH BIRTHS, MARRIAGES AND DEATHS  $
Though you have to pay per image, the indexes can be searched for free but you must register.  Unlike Emerald Ancestors mentioned above, if you're searching the marriage indexes it does not give the first name of the spouse.  In its favour, it covers the whole of Ireland and holds records before 1837.

ULSTER HISTORICAL FOUNDATION (AncestryIreland)  $
This looks to be a useful site for those researching ancestors in the Ulster province, with many records.  Unfortunately the free to view portion is very small, BDM records only, and they don't give the spouse's first name, unlike Emerald Ancestors which does.

 ISLE OF MAN

ISLE OF MAN
All about the Isle of Man and things Manx.  A good genealogy section.

MANX WEBSITES
A list of useful sites for those researching the Isle of Man.

ELECTRIC SCOTLAND  Recommended
Alastair McIntyre's very comprehensive site about all things Scottish, including genealogy.

SCOTLAND'S PEOPLE  $
The official Scotland government site for obtaining Scottish genealogical data. Unlike other sites, you can't subscribe for a specified time but pay by image.  Very expensive but the only source for getting these records
.

Partly $
Scottish genealogy from Scots Family is an ancestor exploration service for people wanting to find and understand their Scottish family roots.  The website features a free Scotland parish list and a glossary of Scottish occupations.  They offer a Scottish ancestry search for a fee.

THE GLASGOW STORY
As well as information, this site has lots of wonderful old photos.
