Frequently Asked QuestionsQ: What is twinning?A:A permanent agreement between two matched communities in different countries to encourage cultural exchanges Q: How does twinning work in Lympstone?A:Parish Council and Lympstone Twinning Association (LTA) representatives signed respective Charters in the two villages in 1978 and 1979. It is LTA members who have continued annual exchanges ever since, travelling in a group to Biéville-Beuville (B-B) in odd years, whilst hosting groups from France in even years. A Committee organises twinning exchanges as well as social events in Lympstone throughout the year Q: How long are the annual twinning exchanges?A:Usually a long weekend. For instance, we might leave Lympstone by coach at 6pm on Friday evening, board an overnight ferry arriving in B-B Saturday morning. Return might be during the day on a holiday Monday or again overnight. Currently exchanges take place at early-May Bank Holidays weekends Q: How many members does LTA have?A:Typically between 3 and 4 dozen, of which perhaps half actually travel or host each year. Whilst active support of all activities is expected, visiting & hosting is not a requirement. Q: Do you need to be able to speak French?A:No. Host French families have varying degrees of English, but although not ideal, long-lasting twinning has taken place between families with only their native tongues. Q: Where is Biéville-Beuville?A:B-B lies 5miles from the ferry terminal port of Ouistreham to the north and 5 miles from the City of Caen to the south. http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&geocode=&q=bieville-beuville&sll=53.800651,-4.064941&sspn=13.470351,25.927734&ie=UTF8&ll=49.24719,-0.327358&spn=0.225017,0.405121&z=11 Q: How much does it cost?A:Annual membership is £2.50 per adult or £5 per family. LTA raises funds each year to subsidise our visits to B-B, but more importantly, our hosting of the French. In 2009 the charge to adults going to France was £35, children free. In hosting years, members who are not hosting but who wish to join in the weekend's activities are charged. Guests on exchange visits pay nothing once abroad. Q: What is the format of these twinning weekends?A:There are usually two organised events during the weekend, a dinner with entertainment for all in the village hall and a trip to a place of interest on another day. There is no fixed agenda for the remainder of the weekend. Q. How can I join?A:Contact a Committee member at any time or attend any advertised event and introduce yourself. |
