The American Legion sponsors a number of scholarships for high school students planning to attend college. Some require that you have a parent or grandparent who is/was a member of the Legion. They also sponsor a public speaking contest. See the folder in Student Services for more details.
 9/17/09The Atlas Shrugged Essay Contest is open to college/university and 12th grade students. To be eligible for this contest, you must write an essay of no fewer than 800 and no more than 1,600 words in length, double-spaced, on a topic related to Ayn Rand's novel, "Atlas Shrugged." Essays are judged on both style and content. The winning essay must demonstrate an outstanding grasp of the philosophic meaning of the book "Atlas Shrugged."  9/30Walworth Publishing company (they print the LHS yearbooks) is giving away three $1000 scholarships. The only criteria is that you must visit their website and enter the contest. This is open to students in grades 7-12. To enter, go to http://www.walsworthsweeps.com/

Wendy's Restaurants have teamed up with the Heisman Memorial Trophy committee for the past 15 years to create the Wendy's High SchoolHeisman Award. This award honors both male and female high school students who excel in academics, athletics, and student leadership. To be eligible, you must be a senior, have at least a B average and participate in at least one school sponsored sport. Applications must be completed online by 5 PM on October 1st. AES Engineering is pleased to be able to continue offering scholarships to motivated students to help in the furthering of their education. Our belief is that achieving a high grade point average should not be the only criteria for determining who deserves to be helped. For that reason we are offering a scholarship that will be awarded on the basis of character, as determined by evaluated the essays that are submitted. Scholarships are intended for our future leaders across a wide spectrum of fields of study. This award is available to high school seniors and all students attending a post secondary educational facility.

 1/9/10    The John F Kennedy Library Foundation is sponsoring the JFK Profile in Courage Essay Contest. This contest is open to students in grades 9-12. Students are asked to write an original and creative essay of less than 1,000 words that demonstrates an understanding of political courage as described by John F. Kennedy in Profiles in Courage . Students should use a variety of sources such as newspaper articles, books, and/or personal interviews to address the following topic: Describe and analyze the decisions, actions, and risks of an elected public official in the United States since 1956 who has courageously addressed a political issue at the local, state, national, or international level.  1/11/10The Hugh G White and Lewis Lynch Tuskegee Airmen Chapters will award a number of scholarships this year. Criteria include grades, financial need, 3 letters of recommendation, and two essays. Pick up a copy of the application in Student Services. Last year only 6 students submitted applications and three of them each received $1500. 
 2/1/10The Mizzou Alumni Association will award a number of scholarships to incoming freshmen at Mizzou, You DO NOT have to be related to a MU graduate in order to qualify for these scholarships.  2/1/10The Beta Sigma Psi Lutheran Fraternity at the University of Illinois - Urbana will award a $1000 scholarship to a male student planning to attend the university. You do not need to join the fraternity. Pick up an application in Student Services.

 2/26/10   The Stahlschmidt Family Legacy Scholarship will award two $1500 scholarships to incoming freshmen or transfer students at SIUE in the fall of 2010. Applications are available in Student Services.
 2/28/10The James & Nellie Westlake Scholarship provides funding for tuition, books, and fees for needy students. Criteria include: planning to attend a 4 year college, GPA of 2.5 or more, Expected Family Contribution (EFC) less than $7000, and family adjusted gross income (AGI) of less than $50,000.
