Blend of original and existing poetry (literature, hymns, fresh Bible translations) speaking the Christian message through idioms of nature. Footnotes and explanations from a Lutheran perspective, but also of interest to other Christians. "Old posts" never "old news."

Disputationes

It was regular practice in the medieval university for faculty and students to engage in the art of disputation. This blog presupposes the corporate nature of the theological enterprise, supposing that theology, particularly Lutheran theology, can once again clarify its truth claims and provide rational justification for its positions.

            The Perverse Lutheran

As a child memorizing Luther’s Small Catechism I learned to say “This is most certainly true” and to emphasize the

adverb with enthusiasm and conviction. But now, I find it is often more important (and more fun) to ask “Is this—

           most certainly—true?”

Not Alone

A blog for dear saints who sometimes feel alone in the world. Christ does not leave us alone, no matter what the circumstances may seem to indicate. Faith in Christ brings us into communion with God, Father/Son/Holy Spirit, and with all who are in that holy communion. The true faith separates us from the world but does not leave us alone in the world.

Confessing Evangelical

The second British Lutheran blog in the world... I'm a former Anglican Evangelical, now what the Here We Stand crew would call an Augsburg Evangelical, in the Evangelical Lutheran Church of England (ELCE). Recent posts (May '05) on my blog are probably pretty representative of its content, covering NT Wright on St Paul, SWE3:ROTS, Joy Division, the proper distinction of Law and Gospel and Martin Luther bobble-head dolls.

Not Quite Art, Not Quite Living

I grew up LCMS in Clifton, New Jersey (not exactly a LCMS stronghold). I came over to the UK to do my PhD in New Testament under I. Howard Marshall in Aberdeen and after a post-doc year at Cambridge University, accepted a great job teaching New Testament at London School of Theology (the new name for London Bible College), the institution where one of my heros, Donald Guthrie, taught. I remain LCMS in my high view of sacraments, liturgy, justification by faith and authority of Scripture; but I'm sure my ecumenism and views on women would get me into the doghouse.
