It was regular practice in the medieval university for faculty and students to engage in the art of disputation. This blog presupposes the corporate nature of the theological enterprise, supposing that theology, particularly Lutheran theology, can once again clarify its truth claims and provide rational justification for its positions. As a child memorizing Luther’s Small Catechism I learned to say “This is most certainly true” and to emphasize the adverb with enthusiasm and conviction. But now, I find it is often more important (and more fun) to ask “Is this— most certainly—true?” 8/1/08

Not Quite Art, Not Quite Living I grew up LCMS in Clifton, New Jersey (not exactly a LCMS stronghold). I came over to the UK to do my PhD in New Testament under I. Howard Marshall in Aberdeen and after a post-doc year at Cambridge University, accepted a great job teaching New Testament at London School of Theology (the new name for London Bible College), the institution where one of my heros, Donald Guthrie, taught. I remain LCMS in my high view of sacraments, liturgy, justification by faith and authority of Scripture; but I'm sure my ecumenism and views on women would get me into the doghouse. http://homepage.mac.com/conrad.gempf/blogwavestudio/rss.xml
