About Us The Lunchtime Legends gently stretched into existence one day when Ed and Neil went for a run at lunchtime. The year was 1990. Since then the lure of the Legends have attracted people from all sports including triathlon, fell running, swimming, cycling, tennis, rowing, gaelic, rugby, endurance sports and motocross as well as the unsuspecting novice. The age ranges from early 20's to mid 60's and it's the older ones you need to watch out for!
A feature of the Legends is fun and informality; there's no membership or fees for example. People turn up because they enjoy the company and perhaps get a good workout at the same time. With great talents like the tricksy Coach, the Warhorse, the Eagle and life advice from Bob Cooke how could one go wrong? The Legends boast a double world triathlon/duathlon champion(Desi McHenry), a former world indoor 3,000m track champion(Karen Marshall), an Everest summiteer(Hannah Shields), a Channel Swimmer(Maureen McCoy) and countless who have done the Ironman, the Marathon de Sables, Paris-Dakar, the Himalyan 100 miles, the Tour d'Etape, the Tour du Mont Blanc and lots of big mountains around the globe.
A highlight of the year is the infamous Christmas dinner where the Geoff Lennon Trophy and Donellys Cup are presented. The Legends strive to live life by the following poem: For Those That Dare It is not the critics that count, or how strong ones stumbled and fell; or where the doers of deeds could have done better. The credit belongs to those who are actually in the arena; whose faces are marred by dust and sweat and blood. But who strive valiantly; who err and come again. But who know the great enthusiasms, the great devotions; and if they fail, at least fail while daring greatly. For they will never be among those grey and timid souls who walk the Earth knowing neither victory nor defeat. |
