GIRL POWER AT AWARDS NIGHT
No woman may have made the shortlist for the BBC’s Sports
Personality of the Year – but they dominated
a glittering 18th Legends Awards night at the Stormont Hotel (Dec 3) both on and off
the dance floor.
The Donnellys Cup recognising international recognition went
to Invictus member Judith Lowry [far left] for her super showing at the World Duathlon
Champs in Spain. The other nominees were : Heather Bamford,Ruth Magill and
Hanna Shields.
The Geoff Lennon Legend of the Year went to Shileen O’Kane [near
left]for an unblemished 11 out of 11 wins in the Hills and Dales. The
other nominees were: Anne Hannon, Wes Kettyle and
Vaughan Purnell. Anne Hannon was, however, a winner in the Survivor of
the
Year category following her crash at the Roth Ironman.
Johnny Megarry won Ducker and Diver of the Year for his
dismount off the blocks at the Ulster Swim Masters. Glenn Pollock won the Humane Award as, in a moment that left
not a dry-eye in the room, he was reunited with the squirrel that had knocked
him off his bike.
Special guests at the Awards included Clare Galbraith who flew in from Norway for the occasion.
From the on-the-night games, Gavin Browne emerged triumphant
in the Bouncing Balls and Dr Daniel Brown, with something of a height advantage, won the basketball.
Entertainment was
provided by Anita from Premiere Circus who would have put any yoga class to
shame and music came from DJ Tony McNulty.
Christmas Track Session
Christmas
cheer at the track. Festivities kicked off with "Up and Down The Drain"
followed by "The 39 Steps". Once the hills were out of the way it was
on to the track for the "100m Backwards", the "400m Pick-Up" and "Devil
Takes the Hindmost".
Competitors could only win once which is
just as well as Kieran McVeigh strolled through the first 3 events. No
surprise that Matt Wilson then took the two "proper" running events.
Ruth Magill scarificed aerodynamic's in favour of a pair of fluffy ears.
