lunar technologies into health care systems
| Lunar
Technologies Ltd, a new computer company in Sri Lanka which is into
innovative hospital software, has won an award as a ‘Start-up' at the
recently concluded “National Best Quality Software Awards 2008”
conducted annually by the Sri Lanka Section of the British Computer
Society. |

Lunar
also won an international award for its software in March 2008, judged
by the Editors of the Computer World Magazine, and for its pioneering
efforts in bringing the benefits of a computerized database to health
care in a developing country. As part of a Swiss Red Cross project
sponsored by Swiss Solidarity, Lunar has developed an advanced MDS
(Multi Disease Surveillance) program to improve documentation of
patients treated in Sri Lankan hospitals and to speed up notification
of infectious diseases. It can print useful reports for the patients
like bed head tickets and discharge letters. The software takes
advantage of Cache from
the InterSystems Corporation , a database system widely used in
hospitals of the industrial world. Lunar is pioneering its introduction
into Sri Lanka. As well as providing a patient medical record, Lunar's
system contributes to public health by notifying infectious cases to
Medical Officers of Health and produces health statistics
automatically. This is very important for preventing outbreaks and
planning health strategy. Lunar believes that this is just the
beginning of more interesting developments to come as the system has
the potential to cover many other areas of patient care and support
hospital management. MDS provides a start to the computerization of
hospitals. It will later be extended to a complete hospital information
system, for better health care.
