Language Notes - Learning with comics

comics -         picture story with speech bubbles.

childish -        somebody who behaves like a child and this behaviour is irritating for others (if it's meant in a positive way then the person is 'childlike')
example: Allan is always complaining about things. He is so immature and childish.

die hard -       take a long time in passing out of existence
example: Although the team doesn't exist any more, the fans meet every Saturday. Their loyalty is very strong and dies hard.

linger on -      exist longer than would have been thought, remain for a long time, (in fact it is quite similar to 'die hard')
example: I thought that my cold was over but I was wrong. It keeps lingering on.

stand out -     surpass others, be prominent and noticeable (also:stick out)
example: He is more advanced and much more ambitious than the others in the class. He clearly stands out in this subject.

must-read -      a book that you must read because it is so good (and not because it is compulsory to read it for an exam).
example: - You haven't read 'Soul Music' from Terry Pratchett? Man, it's a must-read if you like fantasy books with dark humour.

decent -            proper, the right kind, meeting standards
example: He would move to a bigger flat if he had a decent salary.
