PhD Student / Institute for Logic, Language and Computation (ILLC), University of Amsterdam

Visiting Researcher / Centre for the Study of Mind in Nature (CSMN), University of Oslo

Welcome to my homepage! I am a PhD student in the Logic and Language programme at the Institute for Logic, Language and Computation, University of Amsterdam and, for the 2011-2012 academic year, a visiting researcher at the Centre for the Study of Mind in Nature, University of Oslo. I am generally interested in issues at the interface of logic, language, reasoning, and cognition in philosophy and neighbouring disciplines. As particular areas of research, I work mainly in philosophical logic, philosophy of language, semantics and pragmatics. At the moment, I am writing a PhD dissertation on a series of issues concerning vagueness in reasoning and communication, under the supervision of Frank Veltman. Besides vagueness, other topics I am interested in include (in some cases more actively, in some other rather passively for now): the role of context and (pragmatic) reasoning in linguistic interpretation; the nature and conditions of linguistic communication; the semantics/pragmatics distinction; non-truth-conditional aspects of meaning; contextualist, relativist, and expressivist semantics; conditionals; defeasible reasoning; the epistemology of logic; logical consequence; logical pluralism; logical and philosophical aspects of the concept of truth (particularly deflationism); semantic paradoxes.

I started my graduate studies in 2003 as a PhD student in the Department of Philosophy at Central European University, Budapest. Further on, I visited the  Department of Philosophy at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill for four months during the 2005-2006 academic year, the Department of Philosophy at New York University for the 2006-2007 academic year, and the Institute of Philosophy of the Slovak Academy Of Sciences, in Bratislava, for the 2007-2008 academic year. Finally, I found my place at the Institute for Logic, Language and Computation, in Amsterdam, where I arrived in September 2008. For the 2011-2012 academic year, I am a visiting researcher at the Centre for the Study of Mind in Nature, University of Oslo. I did my undergraduate studies at Babeş-Bolyai University, in Cluj Napoca, back home in Romania.
