Gardens

Our yard was in horrible shape when we moved . The previous owners were not a big fan of yard work, so we've had years of neglect to try and undo. Here's the beginning!!

Spring 2009

After having a year to learn more about my yard, I set off to revamp my gardens. I planted a bunch of grape hyacinth, regular hyacinth, daffodils, and ranunculus bulbs in the front. So far most of my efforts have paid off! I did learn that the grape hyacinth bloom a lot sooner than the rest of the bulbs, so next year I will plant them a little bit later than the rest. Here are some pics of what is blooming so far!

The infamous Square Foot Garden. We have Jalapeno, tomato, cucumber, zucchini, parsley, oregano, thyme, rosemary, sage, cilantro, chives, basil, three types of pepper: red, green and yellow bell peppers and one empty square until I can find a squash plant

Ranunculus

4 canna lillies

Plumbago (which I can't wait to bloom- I love the periwinkle color)

Dwarf Coreopsis

Sea Mist which I used as a border plant b/c they are supposed to spread

Another shot before things start blooming and spreading

2007 and 2008 Gardening Efforts

When we moved into our house, the yard and gardens were a mess. There were beer bottles and caps all over the yard. The previous owners had planted ground cover, but did not give it any boundaries so it was growing into the grass and all over the garden beds. I spent a LONG time pulling up vines, weeds, amending the nasty clay soil, and trying to convince anything to grow. It was a definitely a trial and error learning process. I can't tell you the number of times I had to dig up and move plants because they were either getting too much or not enough sun, got too big for the space I originally put it, or I changed my mind about the layout of the gardens.

Dh and I honeymooned at Ti Kaye in St Lucia. We had the best time admiring all the beautiful landscaping and dream of returning. I thought that planting a garden with all the plants that were native to St Lucia would be a great reminder of our trip. Sort of cheesy, but also sentimental and fun!

Before and after....we cut down the over grown bushes. There really is a house in there!

Porter weed. This stuff grew like crazy!!
