When one thinks of immigration at the turn of the 20th-century, images of Ellis Island come first to mind.  But for nearly 300,000 Asian immigrants, their first exposure to America was at the Angel Island Immigration Station - "The Guardian of the Western Gate" - an experience that was vastly different from those that passed through Ellis Island.

There is an expression that begins, “If these walls could talk . . . .”  On Angel Island, the walls do talk and they tell a heart-wrenching tale of the immigrants who came there.

Students will embark on a WebQuest that will take them on a journey and will help them to develop a deeper understanding of the thoughts and emotions expressed, by immigrant men and women, through poems carved into the walls of the immgration station.
