"Learning is what most adults will do for a living in the 21st century." -- Perelman
Here you will find a collection of assignments compiled for an Internet technologies class. If any may be of use to you in your own classroom, please feel free to put them into action.
Evaluating Useful Web Sites Activity
Technology in the Classroom Cartoon
- This cartoon was created to showcase just a couple of ways technology can be used (and should be used!) in today's classroom. It was created using Microsoft Word and basic clipart.
Excel Tutorial
- Using the website http://www.screencast-o-matic.com/, I created a screencast which walks you through using the auto-sum and chart wizard features in Excel. When looking at immigration numbers around the turn of the 20th-century, the numbers can be overwhelming and tend to be broken down by decade. If I wanted my students to look at several countries and compare their rates of immigration throughout the Gilded Age, they would have to sort through several sets of numbers. I decided Excel would be the best way to manipulate that data into a more user friendly format. Using 5 different countires as examples, I entered the number of immigrants coming to the United States across 4 different decades. I then go through the steps on how to total the data for each country and use that data to create a pie chart. The pie chart is more visually apealling than sets of numbers and anyone can quickly look at the chart and know which country had the most people immigrating to the U.S.
Podcast
- Created on the website http://podomatic.com/, this podcast is an interview with an actual high school student. It's purpose is to give advice to preservice and beginning teachers from those they will be facing everyday. Sometimes, hearing the words from the kids instead of researchers really drives home what we learned from our professors. A transcript of this podcast is available. If you are trying to access the podcast and get stuck in Pod-O-Matic's endless cycle of opening media, trying downloading the mp3 directly.
My Flickr Photos
- You can check out a collection of photos I've assembled on my Flickr page. Just from looking at my photos, you can learn a lot about me!
Angel Island WebQuest
- The above link contains a WebQuest in which students investigate the meaning behind the poems of the Angel Island Immigration Station by uncovering the island's past and present.
