Course Overview

Standard Chinese for Adults 

    Our Chinese course for adult learners consists of 3 levels. Each level is made up of 10 lessons organized around 10 topics: greetings, introduction, numbers, time, place, travel, activities, shopping, feelings and the weather.

    The Beginner Level gives you a general introduction to the Chinese language, provides you with simple everyday dialogues that you're likely to use in different situations. Pinyin is used for all the dialogues to train your ears in terms of the sounds and tones. In the culture information section, various aspects of the Chinese culture are introduced and explained in English. Interesting combinations of Chinese words are given as examples to illustrate the pictographic or ideographic features of Chinese characters.

Outline for Beginner Level

     The Intermediate Level gives you a general introduction to the Chinese grammar and phraseology, equips you with typical sentence patterns to express a certain idea. Chinese characters are used together with pinyin so as to familarize you with some common Chinese characters. In the culture information section, various aspects of the Chinese culture are introduced and explained in English, sometimes related Chinese phrases or sayings are given. Idiomatic or set phrases are taught as writing examples. At the beginning of each lesson, a revision is designed as a warm-up exercise. At the end,  a Chinese proverb or saying is given for possible future quotation.  

Outline for Intermediate Level

     The Advanced Level gives you Chinese texts and dialogues that are more varied in styles. It introduces you to some most frequently used radicals, provides you with more vocabulary and demonstrates the different meanings that a phrase may take on in different situations. The used of pinyin is reduced to a minimum in the hope that more efforts will be made to learn the characters. In the culture information section, some historical and political topics are introduced and explained in English, and a brief summary is provided in Chinese.  At the beginning of each lesson, a revision is designed as a warm-up exercise. At the end, two related set phrases are taught as writing examples.
