Chapter 1 (INTRODUCTION)

Einstein Quote of the Day

An RPM meter (tachometers) is used for the measurement of revolutions of various rotating objects. In an industry revolution of a rotating body is a vital parameter which has to be monitored for various purposes .For example in a generating station the output voltage depends upon the rotor rotating the turbine or the shaft. In an odometer which is usually used in vehicles is also a form of RPM (Revolutions per Minute) meter where number of turns of wheel is calibrated in terms of Miles per hour.

There are two types of RPM meters, contact and non contact. Generally when using the non-contact mode, rotational speed (RPM) is measured using a visible beam of light. In the contact operating mode, the speed is sensed by directly contacting rotating device using a contact adapter.

In recent times a similar type tachometers are used in many industries which give revolutions of a rotating body. Some tachometers, especially those used in automobiles, are similar in construction and operation to automotive speedometers. In an another type of tachometer, used with engines having an ignition system, operates by counting the pulsations of current or voltage in the ignition system, the number of these being proportional to the speed or rotation of the shaft.

In order to measure revolution per minute for a revolving object in an industry as well as in day to day life a multipurpose RPM meter needs to be developed. The medium scale combinational and sequential circuits of digital electronics based RPM meter can be developed as it is portable and light weight. This has been built up with low cost components available in the local market. As well as it is more accurate and reliable. Therefore it can be called Low Cost Digital RPM Meter.
