Tourism

Tourist Mind

'The highest purpose of tourism is to become better acquainted with people in other places and countries. This furthers understanding and appreciation.' (Charles R. Goeldner and J. R. Brent Ritchie - business and economics gurus from the travel world)

Go to this link:

READ and LEARN about various places across the planet. Focus on major world centres and places. These will be part of the quiz you'll be doing next week.

Have fun!

JUNE is here - Yay!

June 7th and 9th will be presentation days, finally.

Friday June 10th will be a day filled with learning about the world's landmarks and photogallery of awesome places. Your task is to use the computers to generate a multi-page document to REVISE and LEARN world landmarks for a photo-test NEXT WEEK in class. You will also be invited to revisit the entire year's work to see how much about the world you have picked up on your travels.

FRIDAY: Bonus material and to while away the time learning something useful. Prepare a document containing enough useful information about the grand old city of BOSTON, MA.

MAY update: SPACE PROJECT NEEDS COMPLETION! MAKE IT AWESOME!

Travel Tuesday (today May 17th) will be spent doing two things IF YOU'RE NOT BUSY WITH BUILDING YOUR SPACESHIP:

1. Summarize the Travel Tuesday section of the Province today. Read about the destination or service(s) featured and write about it all in 150 words or less.

2. Go to the following link:

Watch a series of videos about REAL people in REAL tourism positions around Canada. This will give you a greater insight into the working practices of the industry itself. It's fascinating.

3. Choose THREE videos and provide a closer insight into their positions and working environments. This is important because you'll have an insider's view.

4. Take a few of the quizzes. They're interactive and fun.

Space Race: The travel and tourism industry will be a different kettle of fish in years to come as more of the world and far, far beyond is opened up to travel possibilities never before imagined. Make sure your SPACE BROCHURE is ready for completion and presentation on TUESDAY MAY 24th or Thursday May 26th. Yep, that's the deadline for the presentation of the following:

  • Your SPACE TRAVEL brochure - what does your tourism firm offer? What makes you unique? What are the typical costs of the various types of packages on offer?
  •
  • The SPACE CRAFT - either a funky LEGO model or something a bit more substantial made from materials to be gathered over the course of the next couple of days.
  •
  • Your WEBSITE containing colourful details and links to all kinds of SPACE FUN.

Too much to read? Stop complaining; it's called work. Get used to it!

Quick Research Question: My really good childhood friends are finally tying the knot (way to go, Willie and Kat!) and the media fenzy surrounding Will's and Kate's forthcoming nuptials has given rise to a mighty city in London where upwards of 8,000 journalists will follow each and every step of the United Kingdom's future King and Queen.

Your task: find the route they will take to the Palace here:

Learn a little about the Palace, Westminster Abbey and feedback in the form of a simple WORD document with pics and history.

Also, write a short paragraph about the wedding. Are you excited about it? Why or why not?

Please continue with the SPACE RESEARCH. Also, talk to me about the model building exercise. Have you started collecting odds and sods to build this yet?

(BONUS MARKS TASK) You will now be working solidly on your SPACE project. Bear in mind this will entail all kinds of information gathering and the production of a physical craft AND a brochure with presentation notes.

Meanwhile, if you have already started this and need a short break from all things space ... with our beloved Canucks doing so well in the Playoffs right now, why not take a tour of The Windy City (and why is it called that)?

Put together a WORD document with some integrated pictures and information about this amazing metropolis.

  • What can you see and do in 24 hours?
  • Which famous people call Chicago 'home'?
  • What can you find out about the Blackhawks?
  • 1-2 pages - lots of detail please.

April 12th onwards

Space Tourism and Travel is almost with us! Firstly, you need to use the available LIBRARY time to complete the HONEYMOON work and email me the appropriate links to your PREZI or POWERPOINT (or provide a hand-produced version)

Secondly: check out the links below to start your journey into Space Travel. Use these to get an overview of the forthcoming project, which is attached at the bottom of this page:

April 7th 2011

In FOUR weeks' time we will be heading to Wild Play in Maple Ridge for a day of fun, ropes and heights. It'll be a hoot! Bring your $36 asap (by next week please - April 15th) so we can send off the deposit money to secure the site for the group for that day.

Also, start collecting bottle tops, coloured buttons, aluminum foil, egg cartons etc for a special SPACE TOURISM project that will see the group travelling into the stratosphere and beyond as space travel becomes a reality. Look at Richard Branson's wesbite for details of his space travel opportunities. Have a couple of hundred thousand $ to spare? You, too, can go up into space! Cool!

More details to follow!

APRIL 5th-7th
Honeymoons, Babymoons and future Moon vacations ... I mean, really?!

March 31st/April1st
DONE with Chinatown, Little India and Little Italy? It's time to take a little ME time ... well, YOU and YOURS time, since you're now a married couple.

MOONING of the HONEY kind. See document below:

March 29th 2011 - It's almost April!

So we're meant to be going to Grouse Mountain for a jolly good look behind the scenes at a world class tourist attraction. You know the score ... cough up $20 or thereabouts and we're off. The trouble is, of course, you need to get this money and consent form back to me as soon as you get them. I'm still waiting on confirmation from the school district and Mr. Keenan, so we might end up pushing this back yet another week! Agghhh!

Don't worry, chaps, we'll eventually get there!

Task: Travel Tuesday work - let's take a closer look at what we're doing to expand our knowledge of the world, shall we?

Today, it's all about the vibrant Chinese neighbourhoods which can be found in major cities across the globe. In particular, New York, San Francisco and right here in our very own Vancouver, have colourful, exciting and inviting cultural experiences for all travellers to share. Take a closer look yourself.

Explore the following in the Vancouver region. For each, provide details of history, culture and types of services particular to the ethnic groups represented.

  • Little Italy
  • Little India
  • Chinatown
Present your findings in a format that explains and shows your research.

Due: Friday this week.

March 8th - Travel Tuesday
Download the latest research task below ...

March 1st - St. David's Day!

Who was St. David?
How is St. David's Day celebrated around the world?

This week all week. Next week on THURS, Serving it Right Test - READ/STUDY on Tues of next week!

January 2011 - back to the world of Travel ...

Let's take a moment to look at technological advancements in the world of travel since pre-history to modern day and beyond. Your task is to navigate sites that provide information about travel history and, in particular, explain how technology has impacted travel the world over.

Create a TIMELINE like the one attached at the foot of the page. Follow instructions with care. Make it bold, colourful and informative. (20 marks for content, clarity and presentation).

Due: Tues 11th

Serving it Right: Start here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mNp3Keplpps

This newscast was featured on A News in Victoria at the end of September 2010. Watch and discuss.

Serving it Right Program Manual: You will receive ONE of these. It is your responsibility to look after it. Please bring it with you to each Tourism class until Winter Break. Take it home over the hols and READ it again. The test will be administered when we return.

First task after watching the video: Read the introductory pages 5-11. Answer the questions that follow. Discuss and keep for review.

December work: Firstly, we need to complete the SRT Video touring project. With limitations on classes with Video access and all the time it takes to piece this together, we will need THIS WEEK for filming and TWO blocks for editing. Dec 2nd (today) is just too soon, especially with snow, absences and rotating schedules!

Next up: In a timely intervention just before the merry season, we will look closely at Serving it Right and work through the project booklet. This should be completed as soon as we arrive back in the New Year. The TEST will be done in class and mailed away. Should you require CERTIFICATION, there is a cost implication. This is YOUR responsibility and choice.

November 22nd - 26th
Tour guiding - Tues and Thurs will be reserved for filming and a short presentation by Mr Dingler on Thurs to work on editing effectively. Projects will be due on Thurs of the following week (Dec 2nd). Hopefully, this will be enough time to get your work formatted and edited ready for presentation.

November 16th-18th

SRT VIDEO TOUR & Tour Guiding

Read the notes attached below

Here are some simple guiding notes to help you create the best possible video tour of SRT.

  • Do NOT use the word 'LIKE' during every other word of your presentation.
  • Title graphics would be advisable. Don't go straight to the tour or images of people (more to follow ... I've run out of time today... watch this space!)
November 9th-12th

Travel Tuesdays are here. First stop, Phoenix, Arizona!

Read the Province travel article and then answer these questions. Do the task that follows:

1.     With what is Phoenix typically equated?

2.     How many days of sunshine does Phoenix usually enjoy annually?

3.     When is the best time to visit Phoenix?

4.     Why is Phoenix the ideal destination for outdoor enthusiasts? Give two examples of outdoor activities adventurers can enjoy.

5.     According to the writer, what is it that ‘stimulates the appetite’ and what was it that she ‘noshed on’?

6.     How many lakes are there near Phoenix? Name two lakes and explain what can be found there.

7.     What will ‘lure the guys’ to Phoenix?

8.     Name three areas that might be attractive to females. (Do you find the writer’s choice of wording somewhat sexist on this page?)

9.     Name three dining establishments visited by the writer and explain what she ate there.

10.                        Where can partygoers visit? Name at least three venues.

Assignment: Create a TRAVEL POSTER using the knowledge and information gained from this travel article. Highlight key areas and services. Make it colourful.

Classwork: due at end of Friday’s class. Please hand in before leaving.

NOVEMBER 2nd

OK, so we won't cross paths until next Tuesday 9th, so please use this as an opportunity to get caught up on any outstanding issues. In class today, we will do some display work and think about how the multiplier effect is so important to us. We'll also look at some more cool powerpoints to drive home the importance and variation of international travel needs.

I will speak to all of you individually, too, in order to collect information and get you updated on check-my-mark.

October 26th-28th
OK, so I have been suffering from a bad back these past few days, hence my absence on Tues. Did you ...?

  • Complete outstanding work from previous class(es)?
  • Read the fascinating ppt on Dark Tourism and the Wiki article and links?
  • Complete the Dark Tourism task?
  • Go through the Multiplier Effect ppt?

October 28th - today we will spend a bit more time on the muliplier effect. In order to see how this works in the industry, you will need to complete the assigned task in class time. Check it out below:

Next Up: The Multiplier Effect - see ppt below.

October 19th-21st
See below for details since we did not get to use the library computers on Thurs last week. I am waiting for some documents from several class members. The Dark Tourism needs to be completed as directed below under Oct 12th-15th.

See also the Powerpoint by Philip R. Stone from the University of Central Lancashire for a detailed insight into the fascination with Dark Tourism in Britain - attached below.

October 12th - 15th

Make sure you have completed the Travel Terror and Travel Itinerary work first. Next, research the term 'Dark Tourism' and see what you can find out.

Create a word document with information, links and a detailed paragraph defining the term. Answer these questions separately:
  • Why is this a growing form of Tourism?
  • Give FIVE examples, with pictures and links (if appropriate) of dark tourism across the globe.
  • Research the Lower Mainland or the whole of this Province and see what examples of Dark Tourism can be found here or nearby. Provide specific detailed information please.
START with this link for information:

Send me your document via email when done. Make sure you get a reply.

October 4th-8th
Well, we're still in the library finishing off our websites and powerpoints on the Eight Sectors in Maple Ridge-Meadows. Have you emailed me the link to yours?

If finished, please download the document: Travel Terror. Read it carefully and then do the two simple tasks. Email or hand in your responses. Please do this when you have finished the Eight Sectors work.

When/if done, please download the next document: Tourism Travel Itinerary. Follow the instructions to the letter, please.

Back to the classroom on Thursday please. Also, ALL work needs to be handed in by Thursday's lesson. I need the links to websites emailed to me, please. Expect a confirmation email so CHECK again once you've sent it to me. No email back? That means I have not received something from you. Wait 24 hours once you send me something before expecting a response, although I DO try to get to things sooner.

Go scrolling to the bottom now ...

  • Come back on Tuesday prepared and excited about the EIGHT SECTORS OF TOURISM - we'll read and discuss.

We will look at this in more depth on Tues with work to follow.

Keep up the good work. If you missed the Powerpoint homework deadline (without good reason and consultation), you'll end up with ZERO marks for an unfinished project or HALF marks for a late one. You were advised about this. Don't blame me; look to yourself and figure it out.

To those of you who sent me email homework as requested, you should have received an email reply from me. Well done. The marks will be noted and reported once Bcesis is properly up and running ... If you didn't, you neglected to abide by the task's instructions appropriately. READ the small print and do what it required and expected of you. You'll thank me one day ...

Like I said, keep on top of things!

Hi Students! Download the Budapest powerpoint. Identify its strengths and weaknesses and then set about creating your own powerpoint on your FANTASY VACATION location!

See attached documents below for all details including due dates and info.

Take a look at this really cool site. The SEVEN WONDERS OF THE ANCIENT WORLD are showcased in some detail here. You will need to review this site for future lessons coming soon. Enjoy!
