MASTER JIM ROUSSELLE WINS HISTORIC FIFTH TITLE AT 2011 LOUISIANA CHESS
CHAMPIONSHIP
Rousselle
bests 2009 Champion Adam Caveney and Florida National Master A.J. Goldsby on
tiebreaks to set multiple records.
While Tropical Storm Lee raged outside, 44 brave souls
converged on the New Orleans Airport Hilton to compete in the 2011 Louisiana
State Chess Championship. When the winds
had calmed, Rousselle finished with an undefeated score of 5.5/7 to take home
his fifth state championship. Rousselle
beat four opponents, including defending champion Dr. Albert E. Franklin, was
held to draws by Goldsby and Caveney, and conceded a quick draw in the final
round to Stephen Curry, knowing that the tiebreaks would give him the
title. Goldsby and Caveney also finished
undefeated, with Goldsby drawing Rousselle, Caveney, and Franklin, and Caveney
drawing Rousselle, Goldsby, and Mitchell Costanza.
By winning his fifth state championship, Rousselle joins
only NM Alfred Carlin (five titles), FM John D. Bick (six titles), and the
legendary A.L. McAuley (nine titles) as the only people to ever win five state
championships in Louisiana. Rousselle,
who previously won the state championship in 1974, 1976, 1977, and 1984, also
set records for the most years in between titles (27 years), and most years in
between first and last titles (37 years).
To put Rousselle’s achievement in perspective, Caveney, who is no spring
chicken, having been controversially denied the title in 1992, was born two and
a half months after Rousselle won his first state championship.
With scores of 5/7, Curry and Mississippi teenager David
Huang split the prizes for first and second under 2000. Joining them at 5/7 was Louisiana scholastic
player Andy Beams who won the first prize for under 1800. Jorge Vega and James MacManus shared the
prize for second under 1800 with scores of 4.5/7. Two more Louisiana scholastic players, Eli
Karp and Botao Shan, shared the first and second prizes for under 1600 with
Martin Cooperson, Jr., all finishing with scores of 3.5/7. Scholastic players also took home the under
1400 prizes, with Prokkawn Majumdar finishing first with a score of 3/7 and
Stephen Crocker and Christopher Chimento finishing second with scores of 2.5/7. The prizes for under 1200/unrated went to
Robert Pegg and Ramil Rebosura, who both finished with scores of 2.5/7.
Unfortunately, from an organizational standpoint, Tropical
Storm Lee kept the total number of participants very low, costing the Louisiana
Chess Association (LCA) a significant amount of money and forcing it to adopt
austerity measures at the business meeting held during the tournament. Caveney organized the event on behalf of the
LCA, and the tournament was ably directed by Bob Ballard. The 2012 LCA Chess Tournament schedule will
