The outskirts of Pittsburgh have been home to artist Betsy Jones her entire twenty-seven creative years. Her family jokes that Betsy was ‘born with a marker in her hand’, as she was drawing before she could even speak!

Initially, Betsy received some instruction on her use of technique from her father Darrell, multitudes of books, and of course, Bob Ross episodes. She was fortunate enough to go to Woodland Hills School District, where they have a wonderful and encouraging Fine Arts department. It was during her high school years that Betsy fine tuned her technique, but her vision was just starting to develop. Betsy’s senior year in high school proved to be the most accomplished, as she won a number of awards (Gold and Silver Keys) at the Scholastic Art Awards in 1999, a national juried competition among high school students. That spring, she applied to the school of Fine Arts at Indiana University of Pennsylvania, and attended the university’s Portfolio Review for admission. When Betsy walked into the art department’s office to obtain the results of her review, she was greeted with a standing ovation and congratulations – she was the first person in twelve years and the first woman in fifteen years to receive a perfect score!

Since then, many years have passed, and Betsy has been searching within herself, looking for her vision, and it is apparent that she has found it! She has been working on a number of collections and new techniques, perfecting each as she grows creatively.
Lately (2004-present) Betsy has been focusing on four collections of artworks, each quite different than the last.

The classiest, and most traditional, collection is her “Lost Traditions” series; drawings and paintings influenced by the Japanese Geisha. The most eye-catching and colorful works are her “Circles” series; a collection of geometric abstract landscapes done in either colored pencil or acrylic paint using concentric circles, straight edges, and free forms. Betsy has also been using geometric abstractions to create intricate yet bold designs inspired by the traditional Mehndi (or Henna) body applications. Lastly, Betsy has been focusing a great deal on work that exudes spirituality, reflection, and meditation in an impressionistic and occasionally abstract fashion. These are the works that truly delve into the depths of the artist’s mind, surprising even herself!

To date, Betsy’s desire is to bring her experience and vision to all people – those who could purchase any original Matisse to those who have never been exposed to even a single drawing. Her ability and desire to just make people stop in this world of instant gratification and multi-tasking is an amazing feat in itself, and one that she takes quite seriously! And it is easy to see why so many do take the time to stop – Betsy has a rare talent for combining the traditional with the modern; the colorful with the monochromatic; the meek with the bold; the stoic with the emotive… and it is all beautiful!
