Brunetto's Symbol
Brunetto Latini (c. 1220-94), who introduced humanist discourse and policy to his native Florence, was a notary, whose handwritten symbol -- a fountain gushing from a solid base -- evoked the spirit of his hero, Cicero: a flow of eloquence emanating from a solid base of learning.
