The City of London Friends of Cancer Research UK started life in August 1999 when a group of like-minded, relatively young City workers banded together to make more official what had been some ad hoc fundraising for the previous 18 months. Many of the initial group of friends are still involved (and are indeed still friends!) although the intervening 20 years means that describing them as young is no longer appropriate (although they would argue that “young at heart” is very much accurate).
A good smattering of young talent has also joined the group in recent years, keeping it fresh and lively. Our ethos has always been to stage events for the enjoyment or life enhancing experience of the participants and this is reflected by our motto “Saving Lives – Having Fun”. Maria Martin started volunteering for City of London Friends of Cancer Research UK in 2003, organising the first successful Spring Ball in April 2004. After 4 fun-filled balls, Maria left the volunteering world in 2007 to work for the Myasthenia Gravis Association (MGA) and unfortunately the City of London Spring Ball was left behind too. Still working for MGA, Maria approached the City of London Friends of Cancer Research UK in 2009, to find out whether they would be interested in bringing the Spring Ball back, in association with MGA. Without much persuasion the Spring Ball was put back on the City of London calendar for 2010 For more information on the other events that the City of London group organise please check out their website www.crukcity.org.uk For more information on the fundraising events of the Myasthenia Gravis Association, in London and nationwide, please go to www.events.myastheniagravis.co.uk
