Food Classification Food can be classified into several different groups depending on what the food's dietary rating is. There are five main food groups consisting of the more natural foods instead of products such as pizza, pie or condiments that are combined mixtures of certain foods or contain little health value. According to the National Food Guide, the five key food groups are: 1) bread, cereals and potatoes, 2) fruit and vegetables, 3) meat, fish and alternatives, 4) milk and dairy products, and lastly 5) fatty and sugary foods1. Within these groups are all sorts of foods ranging from apples to beans to cheese to chocolate and to tomatoes. The National Food Guide divides these foods into groups based on their health content1 you cannot have more than one 1.. For those who are searching for a healthier dieting style, it would be wise to look into these main groups to help get an idea of what dietary benefits they are or aren't receiving. By simply looking into the healthiness that these foods offer such as proteins, carbohydrates, vitamins and minerals, one can change his eating habits to develop a healthier lifestyle. The first mentioned food group consists of bread, cereals and potatoes. To be more specific, within this division are many subcategories that fit into it based upon the ingredients of the food. This particular group includes all breads with yeast, all cereals like oats and rice, as well as potatoes or other starchy foods. "The food in this group gives your body energy”2. The carbs and other ingredients give you body the power to do activities and be active. “Grains supply food energy in the form of starch, and are also a source of protein”3. This just shows how these foods hit the body and what they produce to give you the energy one is looking for. In some cases, beans can be apart of this group, but are more associated with the meat group. The first group I designed to give energy but too much of these foods can lead to fat gain if the proper amount of exercise is not done. The next food group contains fruits and vegetables. Of course, there are hundreds of fruits and vegetables ranging from an orange to a tomato. Incorporated in this set are all fruits and vegetables as well as juices and dried fruit and even canned food. In addition, beans can be included within this group. "The food in this group helps keep your body healthy, for fruits contain many vitamins”2 even if this note is exactly the same as the previous 2 - you cannot reuse it. The needs to be the next number.. these vitamins are necessary for the bodies main functions and help give us energy and strength. Vegetables are crucial in providing our bodies with fiber and minerals4. These great items of food help our body function and for example carrots help your vision. Vegetables and fruits are the most necessary food group for our bodies health. Next is the meat, fish, and alternatives group. Included in this group are all meats and meat products. "Meat is a major source of protein, as well as iron, zinc and vitamin B”3. the vitamins from these sources of food are great but only in moderation just as anything. Too much beef and that can cause high cholesterol or diabetes. “Some meats and meat products are high in fat”5. these fatty substances alter the body is undesirable ways if eaten too much and with no exercise. Furthermore, poultry, meat analogues, seafood, nuts, beans and eggs are part of this group. These food types contain plenty of protein and are important for people looking for a healthy diet and a great way to increase muscle mass with a steady workout plan. Milk and dairy products are another important food group to help maintain a balanced diet and health. This includes all milk, whether it is condensed or evaporated, yogurt, dairy desserts and cheese. These just like any food need to be eaten in moderation because they contain main substances that can cause fat to build up. "This is the best source of calcium which we need to make our bones strong”4. the calcium in these foods are needed by bones and help keep our bones strong and healthy. This food group mainly helps our skeletal system to keep it strong and thriving. The last food group consists of fatty and sugary foods. Butter, spreads, oils, fried snack mixes, oil-based dressings, pastries, chocolate, sugars, jellies and ice cream. Obviously, this group adds little health to one's diet, but it is still a large part of a typical person's eating habits. "Fats, oils and sweets give us calories. Most of these foods do not contain many vitamins or minerals. So they are called "empty calorie" foods”5. This group of foods is by far the worst for our body in terms of health. These are foods that are eaten only so often and in small portions. Just as any food these need to be exercised out to let thwe other food groups help maintain a strong and healthy body. Overall, there are five major food groups that all kinds of food are assigned to based upon their health benefits. It is crucial for people to consume victuals from all of these categories, unless of course they have allergies to certain foods. By dividing these foods into different subdivisions, it permits people to follow a healthier dieting practice. Every existing food falls under one of these labels and is allotted to a specific group based on whether it has vitamins, minerals, proteins, carbohydrates, sugars, etc. This division effectively separates the wide array of foods present today in society.
