Course Outline:

African Canadian Studies 11 satisfies the requirement for a Social Studies/Canadian History credit for graduation. The course offers an opportunity to acquire understanding and knowledge of African culture and its contributions to the development of Canada as a nation rich in diversity. Through both chronological and thematic approaches, the development of the course highlights the African Canadian experience and provides opportunities for learners to gain a deeper appreciation of Africans and people of African descent.

 

Framework:

Evolution and Change

Students will demonstrate an understanding of the development of culture and Afrocentricity.

Elements of the African Diaspora

Students will examine African history and pre-colonial kingdoms up to the transatlantic slave trade.

The Impact of Colonial Expansion

Students will demonstrate an understanding of the impact of colonial expansion on the African diaspora.

The Struggle for Identity

Students will demonstrate an understanding of the relationship between the conditions of: the resistance to and the aftermath of slavery, and its implications on African Canadian settlement.

Independent Study

Students will engage in specific research using historical methods and will communicate the results of the research.

In Pursuit of Justice

Students will analyze critically, the struggles of peoples of African descent for the pursuit of civil rights and equality.

The Journey Toward Empowerment

Students will investigate the importance of collective consciousness of peoples of African descent as a strategy for empowerment.

Evaluation and Assessment:

Project Work 20%

Class Work 40%

Tests 10%

Final Exam 30%

Class Expectations:

Attend all classes. In the case of illness, complete missed assignments as these are necessary for understanding of material. Be aware that all endeavors are marked and that you lose 5% per day for late assignments.

Be prepared to work upon entry into class.

Bring your binder and a sharp pencil to each class

Focus on the task at hand whether it is instruction, seatwork, or activity.

Arrange for extra help if you need it.

Respect other people’s feelings, efforts, ideas, and property.

Do not use cell phones, music devices, or cameras in the class.
