I am a Postdoctoral Researcher at the Macquarie Centre for Cognitive Science;in Sydney and the Berlin School of Mind and Brain. For the reason on the right I am currently on leave. I received my PhD in Philosophy from Adelaide University in July 2007. Before that I did a BA (hons) in Philosophy and a BSc in Psychology at the University of New South Wales. Research
| My research interests lie at the intersection between cognitive science, philosophy of science and philosophy of mind. I aim both to put philosophical theories to the empirical test and to show how empirically inspired theories can help solve the problems of traditional philosophy of mind. My two main areas of research are: (1) the metaphsyics of mind. Particularly showing that the correct scientific metaphysics is one in which there is explicable emergence and that the connectionist can avoid the problem of mental causation. (2) Mental representation and consciousness. Particularly: showing how adopting a vehicle theory of consciousness enables us to make progress on solving the hard problem of consciousness; gathering evidence that a vehicle theory of consciousness is correct (by demonstrating that phenomenal consciousness is independent of access) and; finding evidence that the mind represents via resemblance. In addition to this I am also collaborating with Glenn Carruthers examining the compatibility of common intuitions about consciousness on cognitive theories of consciousness.
