So why would anyone want to poach trees? Well the direct translation of Heung (香) Tree (Aquilaria sinensis) is Incense Tree. This species was once extensively planted throughout the Hong Kong region thus giving the location its Chinese name – "harbour exporting incense".
Unfortunately over time the tree has been over-exploited and now this essential part of Hong Kong's heritage has become endangered. However it is still highly valued in Chinese medicine and despite the fact that it is protected under Hong Kong law, occasionally trees are harvested illegally. Heung trees in a number of areas of Lamma are now under attack. Someone is hacking at them with an instrument such as an axe, mutilating them, presumably in an attempt to make a quick profit. Damaging such an endangered plant is a serious offence under the Protection of Endangered Species of Animals and Plants Ordinance and is punishable by a fine of up to $500,000 and imprisonment for 1 year. We encourage anyone witnessing such damage to identify the culprit and report them to the police immediately. |
