Architecture 123                 This project was assigned to show our development of line weights and design concept. The assignment criteria was a memorial to a person, event or idea that used hierarchy, axial lines, repetition or symmetry as a central design element.

Here, I chose to commemorate Edgar Allen Poe, the famous Poet and short story writer who is famed for his morbid topics.

The color scheme of the drawings reflects the somber tone not only of Poe's works but of his life, and the cold gray colors, the formation of the spaces and the use of landscape all attempt to relate to the viewer a depressed sensation.

The works I chose from Poe include the poems "Alone,"  "Dreamland," "Romance," and the short story, "Tell Tale Heart." The content of these poems shape the context of the spaces in which they are located.

Do the people look familar?

            Architecture 160

The use of digital tools has become key in the modern architectural field, and this makes it necessary to know how to use the best programs in the market. FormZ, Potoshop, and In Design were the applications explored in this class.

The cube project was one of the first things done in the class. The purpose of the project was to familiarize us with the tools in FormZ., and to generate an understanding of the unique shapes these tools can produce.

The Furniture project is one of the last assignments done in FormZ. Using a design from the furniture company DWR, this couch and table were remodeled. Adding unique surface styles and adjusting the lighting gives the image its sense of texture and depth.

Architecture Practice 105

This is my 105 project from Winter Quarter under Professor Laura Joines. The purpose of this project was to explore the functionality of design while also creating a unique object that forms the space it inhabits.

Part of taking this course was to become familiar with working with the equipment in the CAED wood and metal shop.  This is in part why I chose untreated red oak and 18 gage copper for my project. Although I could have used any materials, I wanted to reinforce my own confidence working with the heavier machinery.

The bottom of the project is a candle holder with a facade of triangles stacked on top of one another and curved back to give them dimension. The copper bands that connect to the underside of the candle shelf and twist up through and around the object tie the lower half of the piece to the upper half while not completely obstructing the shelf space intended for use. The two curved faces that frame the piece are meant to reflect the flame of the candle; the strongest point of suggestion being the sharp turn of the top left piece. The straight edges seen on the same face and in the copper column in the back add contrast and dimension. The column also reflects and refracts light, bringing it into the top half of the peace and further from the source.

This color study is meant to show the difference that color can have in a single composition. Colors were diliberately chosen based on their relationships to one another on a color wheel. The colors that lie next to eachother on the wheel and their values were used in the Analogous study. The Value study is a single hue with only black and white added to create the different shades of color. A full chroma blue and a full chroma orange and their shades define the contrast that colors on oposite sides of the wheel have in the Warm-Cold exploration. The Contrast study uses three colors equally spaced appart on the color wheel and the analgous colors next to them.

        Final Project

A folly is a building that is found in gardens that serves no purpose other than to enhance the atmosphere. The construction of these elaborate garden ornaments was the most popular during the picturesque garden phase in England. Most follies are based off of ancient Greek architecture that was being rediscovered by the western world.

My winter quarter final project consisted of a group                segment where three follies of increasing complexity were built in model form based on a kit of parts and a set of construction restraints. The group then created a set of construction documents before the individual work began. I will save you from the pain of looking at the first stages of this project, and show only the last phase; hand drafted and rendered perspective drawings.

The object was to produce pen drawings with a clear hierarchy of line weights, then render those drawings using a variety of techniques and mediums. For this project, I used colored pencil, marker, and chalk pastels on vellum. Despite the availability of template people, I chose to design my own and was the only one to have done so. The pictures are highly narrative, which may be something to correct depending on the situation, but they do fulfill their purpose; to humanize the                                             structure and to aid in the presentation.
