4th Venetian/ Masters ranking series event Feb7th 2010.
John Torpey won the fourth Venetian/Masters Ranking Series event last weekend Feb 7th. John played excellent snooker all day and beat Jude Meaney 2-1 in the semi final and Frank Sarsfiled 2-0 in the final. This win see John overtake Frank at the top of the Rankings. Top Ten listed below.

The Venetian Regain Munster Club Championships.
The Venetian A Team Managed by Morgan Hayes and consisting of John Torpey, Frank Sarsfield, Vincent Meaney, Jason Waters and Kevin Mc Mahon won the 2010 Munster Club Championships in Killarney last weekend Jan 22-25th. The team qualfiled from their group without losing a match and had narrow wins in the Qtr Finals against Youghal, and semi finals against Waterford A by 3-2 in each case. The manager did his homework and placed the team perfectly for the final against defending Champions New Institute from Nenagh and it was clear from the start that the team were up for this one and they produced their best performance of the weekend to run out 3-0 winners. Many thanks to Manager Morgan Hayes and to club owner Patrick Bird.
Limerick Senior Championship Sun Jan 3rd Venue Venetian Club.
Mario Fernandez Retained his Limerick Senior Championship by Virtue of a narrow 3-2 victory in the final against John Torpey. In the semi finals Mario beat Kevin MC Mahon 4-1 and John beat Philip Burke 4 2.

3rd Venetian/ Masters ranking series event Jan 9th 2010.
Frank Sarsfield won the third Venetian/Masters Ranking Series event last weekend Jan 9th. Frank played excellent snooker all day and beat Kieran Mc Guire 3-1 in the final, Thomas hickey 3-0 in the semi final and Kevin Mc Mahon 2-0 in the Qtr's. Well done to Kieran Mc guire who had an excellent tournament recording wins against Vincent Meaney in the semi final and John Torpey 2-0 in the quarter finals.
Frank takes top spot in the rankings followed by (2) John Torpey (3) John Lynch (4) Kevin Mc Mahon (5) Mike Howley (6) Philip Burke (7) Mike Quinlivan (8) Trevor Hayes.

IBSF World Amatuer Championships Hyderabad, India - 15 - 25 November
Well done to Mario Fernandez from Kennedy Park who represented Ireland at the World Amatuer Championships in Hyderbad , India. Mario who is the current Irish No.1 reached the Last 32 stage of this event, and although he is disappointed it is still an excellent achievement. This win coupled with Marios achievement of getting to the semi-final in the first event means he takes the No.1 position in the Irish Rankings and pole position in the battle for the No.1 spot at the end of the season and the place on the Main Professional Tour joining the likes of Ken Doherty , and Ronnie O sullivan next season.
Mario dedicated his victory to his father Xavier who passed away last month. Limerick Snooker hopes he can continue his winning steak when he plays in the IBSF World Amatuer Snooker Championships in India next week.

Frank makes great start to Irish Intermediate Season
Frank Sarsfield marked his return to the Irish Intermediate circuit in great style by winning the first 2 events of the season and thus takes a comanding lead at No.1 in the Western Section.
In Event 1 played in Casesars Palace in Galway on Sept 26th last he played great snooker all day and beat Cathal gordon 3 - 1 in the final and also had the highest break of the day of 79.

Johnny Cronin Memorial Open Handicap 2009
The Johnny Cronin memorial handicap was held in the Venetian Club on Sat last Oct 17th. Johnny was one of Limericks greatest players and his life was cut short last year at the tender age of 36.
Neil Madigan did a fantastic Job of organising the event and contacting numerous players that would have played with Johnny down through the years. A huge turnout of 70+ players from Limerick Snooker and many more from throughout the country turned up to play in Johnny's Memory.
Darragh Muckell (Left above) prevailed in the event beating Patsy Farrell from Nenagh 2-0 in the final after along days play. Well done Darragh on great days play.
Johnny's wife Nora and sister Beatrice and young sons JJ and Denis were present at the final, and Limerick Snooker Committe member Jude Meaney paid tribute to them, and also special mention to Neil Madigan for the excellent work done to make this memorial event possible.
R.I.P. Johnny you will never be forgotten by Limerick and Irish Snooker.

Limerick Snooker Assoc V Terry Griffiths Matchroom Llanelli Challenge Match Confirmed !
Wayne Griffiths of the Terry Griffiths Matchroon in Llanelli, Wales has kindly agreed to host the Limerick Snooker Association End of Season Challenge Match next year. The Venue is the Terry Griffiths Matchroom and Wayne even mentioned his dad former World Champion Terry Griffiths will be around to meet us.
Provisional date discussed is Friday June 25th 2010 returning Monday 28th June. The ferry would be best form of transport and I will confirm costs of accomodation and all details nearer the time.
Depending on the ammount of players they will get together we will aim to match their number probably 8 - 12 players, but we will try to accomodate as many players and supporters that want to go. The top 8 on the Venetian Masters ranking list at end of the season will have the trip funded.

Philip Burke Wins First Venetian / Masters Ranking Event of 2009/2010 Season
Philip Burke From the Masters Shannon won the first Venetian Limerick / Masters Shannon Ranking Event of the Season beating Trevor Hayes 2 - 0 in the final on Sunday 27th Sept Last.
A good days play was had in the Ventian Club in Hartstogne Street and there were some noteable performances from several players including Philip and Trevor and newcommers Jude Meaney who won all his group matches in qualifying for the quarter finals and John Lych from The Masters Shannon who reached the semi finals.
Philip takes the No.1 rankings and an early lead in the race to finish in the top 8 and qualify for the end of season trip away!!... Full repot and rankings to follow.

MARIO is European Runner Up.
Mario Fernandez won through to European Championship final, but fell at the final hurdle losing to David Hogan fron Nenagh 7 frames to 4. Congratulations to Brendan O' Donoghue from The New Institute Club in Nenagh on retaining the Munster Close in the Venetian Club, Limerick on Sunday May 10th Last. In one of the best quality fields for this prestigious event in many years, Brendan and Limericks John Torpey came through to the final and Brendan produced 3 immaculate frames of snooker to win 3-0. Nicky Higgins R.I.P.
May 5th 2009
Limerick Snooker was saddened to hear of the sudden death following an accident of Nicky Higgins at the young age of 36. Nicky was a valued member of the local snooker scene in the Late 80's and 90's. Nicky had a great love and dedication for the game and was always a gentleman on and off the table. To Mike Howley his good friend and neighbour and to all his family and friends we extend our deepest sympathy. May he rest in peace.

The Limerick Open Handicap 2009 is currently in progress. Like last years event this is a handicap knock out event with an FA cup format, i.e. there is an open draw after every round and player drawn first will have home advantage. Snooker legends : Seven times World Champion Stephen Hendry and Limericks Anthony "Toastie" Cronin. It was Stephen Hendry who got toasted on this occassion.
Snooker Legends Stephen Hendry and Jimmy White played in Limerick on Sat March 21st 2009 and played our own local legends Anthony Cronin and Neil Madigan. Exhibitions are a great opportunity for local players to get on the same table as these legends of the game and the lads did Limerick Snooker proud, both men played very well on the night and Anthony even managed to win his frame with Mr Hendry with ease, well done boys. John Cronin R.I.P.

Limerick and Irish Snooker followers were shocked and saddened to hear that one of the great Limerick players Jonnny Cronin passed away last weekend. Johnny was a member of St Michaels CYMS and the Victoria Club and he won many Irish Senior Ranking titles in the 90's and was one of the few Limerick players to attain the No.1 ranking in Ireland. Johnny also represented Ireland on many occasions. All involved in snooker in Limerick and Ireland extend our deepest sympathy to his wife Nora and young sons JJ and Denis and all his family and friends. May he rest in peace.

LATEST : David Maloney Wins Limerick Masters Ranking Event 4.
David Maloney won the 4th Event of the Limerick Ranking Series held in the The Venetian Club Hartstogne Street on Sunday Jan 4th last. In the final David defeated the current Irish No.1 ranked player Mario Fernandez 2 frames to 0. This was a great days play by David and is just reward for the effort and enthusiasm he has had for the game in recent times. Full Story

The No 1 ranked player in this series Jason Waters surprisingly did not make it out of his group but he still retains the No.1 spot in the rankings by virtue of the fact that none of the top 4 players made it past the quarter finals. Jason’s lead is now cut to 3 points over Frank Sarsfield in 2nd place, Mike Howley and Kevin Mc Mahon in 3rd place and Brian Murphy in 4th. With 2 more events to be played before the top 8 playoffs and only 6 points seperating the next 9 players there is plenty to play for in the remaining 2 events.

Congratulations to Damian Collopy from The Masters in Shannon who won the Limerick Junior Championship 2008 held on Dec 21st in the Venetian defeating David Maloney 3 frames to 1 in the final. Mario Wins 3rd Senior Irish Ranking Tiltle in Carlow
Mario Fernandez from Kennedy Park continued his domination of the Irish Amatuer Snooker scene when he won his second Senior Ranking Event in a row and his 2nd of the 3 events played this year, this win gives him an 11 point lead in the rankings and puts him in pole position for the No.1 spot at the end of the season and a place on the Main Professional tour next year joining Ronnie O Sullivan , Ken Doherty and the like. PJ Nolan the National coach was in the Venetian on Friday last for a Free coaching day provided by RIBSA, (Republic of Ireland Billiards and Snooker Association). PJ is also coach to young Irish professional Vincent Muldoon. Many Limerick players of varying standards attended throughout the day and all agreed that it was of huge benefit.

David Lawlor Wins Limerick Masters Ranking Event 2.
David Lawlor won the 2ndt Event of the Limerick Masters Ranking Series held in the The Venetian Club Hartstogne Street on Sunday November 9th Last. In the final David defeated Kevin Mc Mahon 3 frames to 1 and had fine breaks of 50 and 66 in the first 2 frames. Full Story.

I.B.S.F. World Champ'ships nov 2008.
Congratulations & well done to Irelands Colm Gilcreest who put up a fine display of snooker this week. In the final of the I.B.S.F. World Snooker Championships in Wels, Austria, he lost out 11-7 today to Thailands Thepchaiya Un-Nooh.
Colm played some world-class snooker and was a deserving finalist,finishing as No.1 seed after the group stages. He also held the high break of the champ'ships with a 142, only to be beaten by the Thai' in frame 5 of the final, with a 143.
This is a great achievement for Irish snooker & Colm who is an ex-pro. Well done to Colm and all the lads who competed over the past week. They all certainly did themselves justice.

Gerry Flanagan R.I.P.

All in Limerick and Irish Snooker were saddened to hear that one of the great Limerick players Gerry Flanagan passed away last weekend. Gerry was a member of St Johns CYMS and won numerous local Championships in the 80's and early 90's, Gerry was a quiet unassuming man and very well respected both on and off the table, we know his brother John and nephew David through our snooker and to them and all of Gerry's extended family and friends we offer our very deepest sympathy.

Atiq defeats Jason in a superb Limerick Open final.
The Limerick Open Handicap 2008 final was played last May 16th in the Shannon Rowing Club. The two finalists Jason Waters and Atiq Muhammad produced one of the best finals for many years in a local tournament with Atiq coming out on top 4 frames to 3 with the final frame being decided on the pink.
