The system, also known as "Wi-Fi" or Wireless Fidelity, will provide downtown visitors with a free wireless Internet connection in most public spaces. Examples of these spaces include the Central Plaza area, the Kresge Block, and local surface parking lots and garages. Targeted toward residents as well as traveling business people, the network will serve a dual role for developing the downtown area.
Lightspeed Technologies will install and maintain the network at no cost to taxpayers, and in doing so expand their paying customer base and reduce current overhead costs. Residents and out-of-town visitors alike will be able to use the network free of charge with a compatible laptop or wireless device. All modern laptops and most laptops equipped with wireless Internet cards will be able to access the network, including handheld devices like Blackberries and iPhones.
