5-24-12

Holly and Jay Davis Open the Thirsty Thursdays

with a heavy air sailing lesson
The first of 12 weekly races was attended by 5 of the 7 entrants. The boats held up to the abuse, better than the sore crews, and Irish Car Bomb placed a bullet on the sheet, in front of P C Van Slyke's Red Tide. Much more to come in the next 11 weeks......stay tuned.

2012 Oceanside Harbor Championships

Another season of One-Design racing was wrapped up for Lido 14, Fleet 21 of Oceanside. Mothers' Day, May 13, brought face stinging sunshine and 10 to 15 knot horsepower to the outer harbor in SoCal's sweetest, secluded, racing venue.

At 12:00:01 the first starting horn was followed by the first Individual Recall of the day, as overly aggressive teams were summoned to try again. The steadily building pressure gradient provided just enough power to allow some edgy incidents. Playing With Fire, handled by Jeff Vaught in the back, and Roger Shaw in front, performed an aquatic ballet move which collected several gallons of blue-green ballast in race 3.

While series leaders, Stevy and Hugh Mast were able to hold off a barrage of challenges by each of the other well sailed contenders, the intensity of competition was demonstrated by the final scores of 2nd, 3rd, and 4th, all within a 1 point spread after 5 races.

This was the first season of Fleet Captain, Dan Avina's new scoring format, with previous Fleet winners being scored in a Red Letter Fleet and future Champions in the Blue Fleet. P C Van Slyke and Larry Rowe brought Red Tide to the top step of the podium with a steady, but relentless stream of 2nds and 3rds, while Hulakai (Gary Hall and Jim Lackey) and Playing With Fire won more, but lacked consistency.

The newest boats in the fleet displayed a lot of potential. Scrat II piloted by Carl Streicher, Buckaroo wielded by Lou Servatka, and What? With Adam and Linda Johnson demonstrated the necessary speed and Playing With Fire won several races later in the season under Jeff and Roger's deft control.

The SCYA MidWinters races were included in the Harbor Championship Series for the first time this year and a cameo appearance by False Alarm with Kathy Dryden and Roger Patterson from Mission Bay spiced up this year's Series.

Diana and Steve Rhodes provided precision timing from the G-dock committee station, but their craft, Slippery When Wet is nearing completion of its restoration in time for the coming events.

Oceanside Yacht Club's Regatta Room provided a comfortable respite for sore muscles and a venue for post-race lies and excuses. A new Blue-Fleet Series Trophy was awarded, a beautiful porcelain vase donated by Sue Dijkman ( of Lazlo.) P C Van Slyke with past Fleet Champ, Larry Rowe, put a bead on the trophy and attained the overall lead on the last race day, to lay claim to the Glory Jug. As a few more Fat Tires and Mt Gays flowed, the coveted Van Slyke Perpetual Trophy found its way into the eagerly waiting hands of Stevy and Hugh Mast, Fleet 21 Champions for 2012. P C and Larry were recognized for the 2nd place overall score and Gary Hall and Jim Lackey left with the overall 3rd place trinket.

A short meeting dispensed with business of Fleet Officer Election and the tired teams towed the classic sloops home for a rest … whew… before Oceanside Yacht Club's Thirsty Thursdays start up in 11 days.
