Providence School Library Media Center

Library Snapshot Day

On this day, April 30, 2010, eighty-five 5th grade students listened to book talks on the subject of their required summer reading program.  The librarian, Mrs. Barnett, came to each classroom to present summer reading materials.  The students heard about Maniac Magee, Island of the Blue Dolphin, A Wrinkle in Time, and other books.

Twenty-one kindergarten students came to the library for story time and book check out.  The students listened as the librarian read James Marshall’s award winning fairy tale, Red Riding Hood.  This program was a teacher-librarian collaboration in anticipation of the upcoming Fairy Tale Ball.

As part of our “Students Thrive At Our Library” theme for National School Library Month, students raised $813.91 in a Penny Drop for the library.  April 30, 2010 was the last day for classes to send in their pennies to help our library.  Also, ten students were awarded “Prizes for Patrons;” a reading incentive program that was held to celebrate reading and National School Library Month.

Three-hundred seventy-five books were checked out to students on this day.  Over 400 students visited the library, with about one-third of those students receiving an answer to a pertinent reference question.  Students used computers for research, wordprocessing, and catalog searching.  This is just a typical day in the Providence K-8 School Library Media Center!

Our video features students checking out books, using computers, hearing a book talk, counting pennies, listening to a story, and winning prizes.  We love our Providence students!
