People of Faith

Missouri's 55th District has hundreds of churches and tens of thousands of people of faith -- from across the Christian spectrum to non church-goers.

An interesting phenomenon occurred during the 'Reagan Revolution' where people of faith were called up on to be more politically active.  What has occurred since has angered some and been a great joy to many others.  Regardless of your views of faith and religion, or religion and politics, people of faith feel compelled, often strongly from the pulpit, to participate in the political process.  Personally, I don't feel called by my faith to elected office, nor do I feel compelled to support one particular political party; that borders too closely on idolatry for my tastes.  In my belief and understanding of the Gospel of Jesus Christ the call by God to establish a theocracy on earth, where "the church" is in charge of the secular world.  When that is the case (Middle Ages, various "Christian" and "Islamic" governments, we see demands for orthodoxy, intolerance, unspeakable physical brutality, and failure to respect the rights of those with different views.

I am called, however, to be compassionate and generous to the lost, the last, the least, the lonely, the left behind, the losers in life -- those same people Jesus Christ served on earth; and I am not called to gather political power so that I can force my faith, my beliefs, and my religion on others.  You will not find that Jesus Christ calls us to do that -- and if you do, then your interpretation of the Gospel of Jesus Christ is markedly different than mine.  But you know what?  That's okay!  We don't have to believe the same or even agree.  So, my calling doesn't mean I establish a government to get that accomplished (ala' liberal Democrats), nor does it mean I am called to establish a government to impose my moral code on everyone else (ala' conservative Republicans).  We can all be true to our calling, no matter how different those callings may be, by working completely outside of the force of government.  Remember the saying, that any government big enough to give you all you want is big enough to take everything you have.

As a person of faith, I urge you to consider what your faith calls you to do, and if you truly feel you are called to establish a government to impose your social values or moral code on everyone else, despite the fact we have such a divergence of views, then you should continue to vote for Democrats or Republicans -- the Libertarian approach is not for you.  However, if you feel that a smaller government is a better government, and that lower taxes mean you keep more of your own money (and decide yourself how best to spend it, save it, or give it away), and you want a government that is incapable of imposing anyone else's social or moral code on you and your family -- then the Libertarian Party may just be the right place for you.
