We all want to live in a world where those in need are cared for, nurtured, and allowed to live life at the fullest possible measure.

Americans, in fact, are very generous people, giving billions in contributions to a number of different charities that serve the neediest of us.  Think how much more could be given if more was available to give -- we can get there by reducing the size and cost of government and making sure you have more money each payday that you decide where it goes, and where it helps based on your value system, not on the value system of bureacrats.  Without the burden of increased taxation, Americans will have more of their money -- and since we know they are already generous, can expect them to respond locally to what is needed.

Forced charity by government is costly -- so many dollars flow to bureaucracies and appointed officials, overhead and oversight -- that those truly in need often don't receive what they need; and it comes with strings attached.

Did you know that combined, Lutheran Social Services and Catholic Relief provides more direct, social services to Americans than federal and state welfare programs?  How is that possible?  Generous Americans and a system set up to serve, not BE served.  We can name many more local agencies dedicated to providing relief and support and services -- but taking dollars from the pockets of hard working Missourians and channeling them through the maze of state and federal bureaucracies is not working well.

I challenge you to consider that government is not the right resource to provide for the needy, and the more money we throw at the 'problem' the more money is siphoned off for administrative expenses, overhead, and made available as temptation for fraud, waste, and abuse.  Working together, without the constraints (and strings) of government involvement, people of liberal spirit and heart can lead the charge of change, restore credibility to a failing 'welfare' system, and truly have a direct, lasting impact on all those in need by getting charity out of government and back in the hands of the people who truly care -- you and I, and the rest of Missouri.
