My neighbor Chris asked me what the difference was between a Libertarian and a conservative. Great question! In the world of politics, the social conservatives and neo-conservatives have abandoned the idea of small government -- they have no problems spending more and more money and establishing new, expensive bureaucracies to 'impose' their will on us all -- whether we agree with their positions or not. Sadly, moderates in both wings of the Big Money party (R's and D's) are trying to figure out what happened! The fiscal conservatism of Blue Dog Democrats and moderate Republicans is overshadowed by social/neo-conservatives and free-spending liberals who are outdoing each other when it comes to more and more spending, more and more earmarks for pet projects, and more and more fraud, waste, corruption, and abuse. The answer is, Chris, that Libertarians will work each and every day, with each and every vote to decrease the size and cost of governement, and return the power, money, and influence back to where it belongs -- in your hands, not in the hands of elected and appointed officials. The other part of the answer is that Libertarians will not use the 'force' of government to impose social or morality codes on everyone. Would you want a religion your don't believe in to be in control of the government and have to live by their rules? Libertarians don't want your values compromised by that possibility -- but it also means we aren't thrilled about imposing your social or morality codes on everyone else either. Being able to live out our personal calls to faith in a way that neither infringes on others, nor has their rights encroaching on ours is the goal.
