What do we learn in IB Spanish?

The IBO Language B guide specifies an IB Spanish class be designed around five mandatory topics: identities, experiences, human ingenuity, social organization, and sharing the planet. The language B syllabus organizes the sources for comprehensible input or “written, visual, audio and audio-visual texts into three broad categories: personal, professional and mass media texts” with the “guiding principle” to focus student attention on “ways in which good communicators consider…audience, context and purpose of what they want to say or write in the process of choosing and developing an appropriate text type to convey a message” (https://www.ibo.org/en/programmes/).

How will we be tested on the IB exam?

Internal Assessment (25% total) – February:

- Individual oral presentation (25%): Interview with instructor (12-15 minutes); students link visual stimulus to thematic areas of class.

External Assessments (75% total) – May:

- Paper 1 - Written Production (25%): Students select appropriate text type & register & compose coherent, well-organized written task (250-400 words / 75 minutes)

- Paper 2 – Listening & Reading (50%): Students respond appropriately to three (3) authentic audio (25 points / 45 minutes) & three (3) authentic written texts (40 points / 60 minutes)

What is the Target Language Contact Log?

- Students register two (2) contacts per week.

- Each contact needs to be at least 10 minutes in length & must be an authentic Spanish language source: Spanish TV, music, websites, podcasts, magazines, newspapers, etc.

- Studying class materials does not count!

- Extra credit assignments count as Target Language Contacts.

- Screenshots count for submissions but must include visible time-date stamp

- Entries graded based on quantity & quality & students encouraged to follow interest areas—if sports, watch sports in Spanish; if music, listen in Spanish; etc.

- Important! Only one (1) entry permitted per day & all entries must be logged on Canvas assignment by Sunday @ 11:59 PM
