Current Research:

For my graduate research, I will be looking at how soil acidification affects soil phosphorus cycling - phosphorus being an essential nutrient for plant growth. Specifically, I am interested in learning how lowering soil pH affects various soil chemical and biological  processes involved in the regulation of phosphorus in temperate forest ecosystems. Not much is known about the mechanisms involved in this tightly controlled process. With the potential for increased coal usage in the United States energy sector - and  the associated increase in rates of soil acidification - it is vital for ecosystem managers to understand these mechanisms so that potential forest responses can be accurately predicted.

Research Interests, etc.:

Since taking a biogeochemistry course in my undergraduate years, I have been interested in nutrient cycling (carbon, nitrogen, phosphorus). In a nutshell, that means understanding the natural cycling process of these elements and learning how human actions can (and do!) affect them. I think I like studying nutrient cycling and ecosystem science so much because it allows me to learn about a bunch of different sciences (I don't have to pick just one).

I am also interested in developing better ways of transmitting scientific knowledge to the public and would like to lend my hand in the creation of stronger science and math programs in the public school system. My future plans are not set in stone, but it is quite possible that one day I will become a high school teacher who dances around the classroom being excited about science!

A note about my page colors:
I recently heard that your computer monitor has to put out much more energy for web pages you view that are white. I decided that I would change my color scheme to a darker one for that reason. I will admit that I did not verify this, so my appologies if I turn out to be misinformed.
