                                                   JUNE, 2008

You made it through your freshman year of English!   Your final exam will be held on Friday, June 13 in the dining hall.  Be there promptly at 8:15 and bring some #2 pencils and a pen.  Bring a drink and a snack, since the vending machine room will be closed.

The final exam consists of 37 multiple-choice questions on grammar and 93 multiple-choice questions about "Romeo and Juliet," and Fahrenheit 451.

    The grammar questions will cover:

     - commonly confused words (You were given a ditto.)  Know how to use accept/except, bad/badly, beside/besides, loan/lend, bought/brought, good/well

     - perfect tense (reviewed below)

     - pronouns as subjects or objects

     - subject/verb agreement with pronouns

You will also be required to answer one essay question in three-paragraph essay form. You will be able to choose one of five possible questions. This means that you will have an introductory paragraph containing a thesis statement, a paragraph supporting your thesis, and a conclusion summarizing your thesis.  Make sure you prepare your thoughts ahead of time so you can answer your question in a cogent, well-written essay.

   The essay topics will include:

     - whether Romeo and Juliet's love would have survived if they had

    - who was most responsible for the tragedy that befell Romeo and Juliet

    -   the theme (lesson) of Fahrenheit 451

   -  a comparison of our present-day American society to that of Montag

    - a personal view of your favorite character from "Romeo and Juliet" or Fahrenheit 451.  Be prepared to explain why this character interested you so much.  This is the only essay in which you may use "I."

  TIPS FOR THE ESSAY:

       - Do NOT use "I" or "you" in any essay except the last one.

     -  Do not use the phrases I think, in conclusion, as you can see...

                  THINK, and remember the rules!
