Grammatical Research Coordinator, Iquito Language Documentation Project. Supervised the research activities of graduate students from the University of Texas at Austin and the Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos (Lima, Peru), who participated in the project (four to six students per summer). Duties included day-to-day consultation on research methods and analysis of data, and critical evaluation of weekly research reports. Other duties included training of community members in aspects of descriptive linguistics, including phonology, morphology, lexicography, and text transcription and translation, so that they were able to participate in the linguistic research and in the preparation of a pedagogical grammar, dictionary, and text collection for use by the community. 1998 - 1999. Instructor, Kaplan Test Prep. Taught MCAT Physics test prep classes to premedical students, and general GRE test prep classes. 1996 - 1997. Instructor and Tutor, Austin Community College. Taught tutorial classes on algebra, pre-calculus, and calculus in the ACC Mathematics and Physics Tutoring Lab. Also tutored students on a walk-in basis on topics ranging from algebra to differential equations, and from introductory physics to engineering physics. 1995 - 1996. Physics Teaching Assistant, University of Texas at Austin. Taught two sections per semester of the introductory physics laboratory course. Duties included lectures, supervision of experiments, and grading of lab reports. 1992 - 1993. English Teacher, English Language Schools Inc. (Seoul, Korea). Taught three quarters of conversational English classes. Positions Held 2003 - present. Grammatical and Lexical Research Coordinator, Iquito Language Documentation Project. Responsible for organizing documentary research on Iquito grammar and lexicon; and supervising a team of five to eight graduate student and community researchers during each academic summer. Duties include organizing a schedule of grammar research topics, advising graduate student and community researchers on data collection methods and analysis of linguistic data, and working closely with researchers on the write-up of weekly reports on assigned research topics. Also responsible for the preparation of an Iquito-Spanish bilingual dictionary based on data-harvesting from transcribed texts and focused elicitation work with Iquito speakers. 1996 - present. President and Co-founder, Cabeceras Aid Project. With Christine Beier, founded Cabeceras Aid Project in 1996, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to supporting the autonomy and well-being of Amazonian indigenous groups, focusing on issues related to land rights, health, and education. Personally involved in the execution of 14 field projects to date, on issues ranging from training of community health workers to monitoring education efforts in indigenous communities. 2003 - 2004. Consultant to the Ad Hoc Inter-Institutional Working Group on the Reserva del Estado Kugapakori Nahua. Carried out research for a working group of Peruvian NGOs seeking to establish further legal protections for indigenous groups living in the Reserva Kugapakori Nahua. Carried out research on Nanti natural resource use, Nanti conceptions of territory, and Nanti political organization to serve as a basis for a land titling proposal for the Nanti communities of Montetoni and Marankehari. Results of this research were published in a book made available to the Peruvian government and relevant NGOs (Shinai. 2004. Kamyeti Notimaigzi Aka. Acá vivimos bien. Assistant Director, Archive of the Indigenous Languages of Latin America (AILLA), University of Texas at Austin. Launched the AILLA project with Dr. Joel Sherzer, Dr. Anthony Woodbury, and Christine Beier. Developed the archive’s initial metadata framework, a system for classifying discourse data to render it usefully searchable by archive users. Developed the conceptual structure of the archive’s graded access system, a system for implementing ethical principles and protection of intellectual property rights. Co-wrote grants to NSF and NEH that successfully secured major funding for the project. Designed and oversaw the programming of the pilot version of the archive database and user interfaces. 2002. Consultant to the Oficina General de Epidemología (OGE), Ministerio de Salud (MINSA) [General Office of Epidemiology, Peruvian Ministry of Health]. Provided linguistic and ethnographic assistance to an OGE research project to evaluate health conditions in the Nanti communities of Montetoni and Marankehari. During the visit of an OGE team to the Nanti communities, provided Nanti-Spanish translation and facilitated interviews with community members. Also made available ethnographic and demographic data collected with Christine Beier. Collaborated with the OGE team in the writing of the official report (MINSA. 2003.
