CNN highlights growing interest in food co-ops

posted Jan 6, 2011 9:49 AM by LES Food Co-op   [ updated Jan 6, 2011 10:04 AM ]

A short piece about food co-ops in NYC as a way to get quality goods at affordable prices. It also mentions that it's so popular in Brooklyn that expansion is required. We hope to join the group of organizing co-ops that open a store front. Look forward to our operating without a storefront as early as March!

And we're back!

After a little summer reprieve the core group is back and starting to meet regularly. As previously posted, we are still looking for new people to help bring the co-op to realization.

Going forward we will work on legal incorporation as a co-op, starting a buying club for dry goods and groceries, and finally continuing to plan out what's needed for a store front operation.

If you'd like to come to these meetings or participate from afar, please e-mail lesfoodcoop@gmail.com.

Enjoy the food filled holidays!

Subcommittees forming! Come help out!

posted May 8, 2010 1:54 PM by LES Food Co-op   [ updated May 8, 2010 2:04 PM ]

The core group that had been brainstorming ideas for the LES Food Coop and produced the survey (please take this if you haven't yet), have decided it most efficacious to "divide and conquer" our research. We are splitting off into work groups that will meet or community separately between the core-group meetings and report back to that core group, who will help brainstorm further ideas and possibilities for the subcommittees and help make decisions.

The sub-groups are:
  • Community Relations (publicity, sparking and maintaining interest in the community and among members),
    • Financials (working up a business plan, getting funding, thinking about initial fees),
    • Sourcing (determining the kinds of equipment needed and the kinds of food/goods desired, where to get these)
    • Membership (thinking about how to define membership requirments and benefits, what information to store, membership guidelines and voting structures),
    • Legalities (navigating incorporation as a coop, setting up a bank account (with Financials), then looking into laws and regs for a food store)
    • IT (working on logo, graphics, web site, databasing member info, storing meeting minutes, old publicity, etc.)
If you would like to participate (through face-to-face meetings or through e-mail/phone), please e-mail us.

    Survey of Community Interest

    posted Mar 16, 2010 7:11 PM by Brian C.

Please take our survey of community interest--linked to at left.

Having a large and broad response will help us understand the feasibility of starting a food co-op. It will also help us attract potential funders, be they grant-giving institutions, political offices, or local banks.

Knowing approximately how many of our neighbors would be willing to sign on as members to a food co-op will allow us to better construct a business plan. It will help us decide how much memberships dues might be at the beginning and how much retail space we could feasibly pay for while keeping costs down. Knowing how many of our neighbors are willing to volunteer labor as part of membership will, of course, help us know how much cost-savings will come through that.

    Check out the LES CSA!

New information about the LES CSA has been posted.

The LES CSA seeks to fill the communities need for fresh produce during the summer while supporting the local farmers who tend to the land in our surrounding area.
