  • The Book of the Tournament
    Brian R. Price

The essays collected here relate to knighthood, chivalry and the tournament as practised by today's tournament re-enactment groups, such as the Society for Creative Anachronism, the Adrian Empire, Markland, and others. The author examines the workings of a modern tournament, looking at both the combatants, and those in the galleries.

  • Murder at the War
    Mary Monica Pulver

The war of the title, taking place on a farm in Pennsylvania, is attended by thousands of members of the Society for Creative Anachronism, whose dedication to medieval custom and costume is annually unloosed in this recreation of medieval battle and ceremony. In period dressincluding full armor for the menwith names to match, SCA members speak in chivalrous tongue as King William leads the Midrealm (Midwestern) contingent in carefully regulated battle against King Oswin of the East. Also fighting are those in the Dark Horde, a group of independents who, like mercenaries, hire out to whichever side makes the best offer. But this year the fun comes to an abrupt end when Lord Torstane Shieldbreaker, a querulous and unpopular Horde member, is found near death from a real stab wound. Local modern-day cops suspect Lady Katherine of Tretower, first on the scene and most recent victim of Thorstane's unpleasantness. But Lord Stefan von Helle, her husband and a cop himself in the "mundane" world, solves the murder by figuring out the grammatical intent of Thorstane's last words. While the mystery itself is less than compelling, this first novel's characters are distinctive and its trappings certainly unique. The rub of current times against the mores of centuries past gives rise to a pleasant friction. Copyright 1987 Reed Business Information, Inc.
  • Masters of SCA Combat: Paul Porter, aka SCA Duke Paul of Bellatrix

This first volume presents a unique profile of the philosophy by perhaps the most influential SCA combatant andtheorist, Paul Porter, known in the Society for more than thirty years as Paul of Bellatrix.
  • Here Comes the Reign, Sir Guillaume!: Another collection of warped, wicked and wild stories about medieval history and life in (and around) the SCA.
    Scott Farrell

From jester to king, Guillaume sees the Current Middle Ages from every angle. In his second collection of humorous stories and insightful reflections, Guillaume looks at the lighter side of castle building, jousting on ESPN, learning Arthurian mythology (with the help of tequila), and making topiary animals out of duct tape. Plus, just to prove that no subject is beyond the scope of his irreverent sense of humor, he also shares the laughter and chaos that took place "behind the scenes" during two reigns as King of Caid. Whether by fate or "an implausible disruption of the natural balance of the universe," Guillaume’s readers are in for some royal laughs, and some touching moments, as the SCA’s funniest knight wins the throne and seeks shelter from the reign in a deluge of hilarious stories.
