Legacy Veterans Garden Directors
The four of us began at a program through the Sarpy County Chamber of Commerce – Leadership Sarpy. In this program, we were asked to come up with the concept for a project that would be a legacy for Sarpy County. Two of Courtney’s brothers happened to be deploying for Iraq at this time and the group thought it would be a great idea to have a Veteran’s Memorial built in Sarpy County, as there was not an existing place.
At the Eastern Nebraska Veterans Home, which is a brand new building off the corner of Capehart and 40th street, they had planned on creating a garden for the residents to relax, but ran out of funding. As the Eastern Nebraska Veterans Home has a lot of area outside for a memorial and access for the public to enjoy it, it was the most logical place to put the memorial.
The team did not just set out to provide the idea to others to build it, instead they took on the challenge of raising the money and building the memorial themselves. They have teamed up with the American Legion and CMs Lawn and Landscape to make their dream a reality.
In late 2009, the team started their own non-profit organization, a 501(c)3, called Legacy Veterans Garden.
The plan is to have CMs Lawn and Landscape build the Memorial at the Eastern Nebraska Veterans Home and maintain the landscape for years to come.
Legacy Veterans Garden has held several fundraisers in the past, including “Love a Veteran”, which was a dinner and auction, "An Evening with The Confidentials", and a couple of Golf Tournaments in conjunction with the American Legion.
On July 14, 2011, Legacy Veterans Garden held its Groundbreaking ceremony for Phase 1 of the Memorial, which includes the brick paver patio. However, there is still time to purchase bricks even after construction has completed.
