What's nearby?

Chez Tom is situated in deepest Provence, between the Luberon National Park and the Vaucluse mountains. The surrounding area has many attractions including the extensive area of the former ochre quarry pictured here, the "Colorado Provencal". In this area are good walking trails, an adventure playground and restaurants.

The house is 1.5 kilometres away from the village of Rustrel, which has a traditional boulangerie providing bread, croissants and cakes, an epicerie, and a post office. There is also a hotel (Logis de France), providing meals, and another restaurant facing the square, and a bar providing, as well as drinks, good coffee and croissants for breakfast.

The beautiful old Provencal town of Apt is 10 kilometres away. Apt provides wonderful fresh locally-grown fruit and vegetables, as well as tourist merchandise in the Rue des Marchands. Markets selling local produce are usually held in the square on Tuesdays and Saturdays. There is also a hypermarket, a supermarket, banks, cash machines, and a tourist information service.

Local sights recommended to visit are:
  • The Abbaye de Senanque, a Cistercian abbey with a resident community of monks singing their own unique style of music, and a bookshop;
  • Many medieval hilltop villages, especially Gordes and Rousillon;
  • S Simiane la Rotonde, a medieval chateau with lavender garden, which houses each year a festival of medieval music;
  • The fourth-century baptistery at Venasque;
  • Fontaine la Vaucluse, a renowned local beauty spot;
  • Further afield, the picturesque towns of S Remy de Provence and Aix en Provence.
