Shingo Prize Recipient Gary Conner has developed a way for job shops to use “Value Stream Mapping”.

Lean Manufacturing is not an unfamiliar term to most companies.

Management teams in most organizations have studied Toyota’s adoption of what is commonly referred to as Lean Manufacturing.

Service organizations such as hospitals, hotels, rental car agencies, airlines and others are also recognizing that extracting the eight primary forms of waste in their processes can have enormous benefits; reducing costs, delivery times and defects.

  • Transportation waste
  • Inventory waste
  • Motion waste
  • Waiting waste
  • Over processing
  • Over production
  • Defects
  • Under utilization of talent

One of the fundamental techniques in the Lean Manufacturing “Tool Box” is Value Stream Mapping.

The purpose of Value Stream Mapping is to assist work teams in “Seeing the Waste” in their process.

Unfortunately, many organizations have struggled with the traditional value stream mapping process because their reality is different from the Toyota like OEM (original equipment manufacturers) environment.  Most “make-to-order” companies operate in an environment that has a “high-mix, low volume” sales pattern.  They rarely can predict what will be ordered the next day, week or month.  The value stream map frequently becomes outdated, requiring significant effort to update and maintain.

Shingo Prize recipient for his book “Lean Manufacturing for the Small Shop (published by SME), Gary Conner; author, consultant and trainer has developed a unique and flexible value stream mapping tool that has been used successfully in hundred of companies and service providers, in dozens of industries across the US and Canada.

This new value stream mapping technique is built within a simple spreadsheet program and permits the introduction of real-life conditions faced by make-to-order and even engineer-to-order environments, such as:

  • Changes in the order pattern or changes in product type or mix
  • Hybrid takt times determined by part or service complexity
  • Weighted average operator and machine cycle times achieved by determining process complexity by part type, at each individual step in the process.
  • Weighted average set-up time and process yield, determined by variation and complexity

The spreadsheet can also be used to automatically generate a visual capacity planning report, providing a team with critical staffing and necessary work in process inventory levels.

Value Stream Mapping Workshop Announced

By providing wage rates, program users can see the cost of non-value added activities.

Distance traveled information and value added ratios are made visible throughout the program. Space utilization and documentation of quality and safety related issues are provided for each process step.

Space is provided for teams to document their ideas for improvement gathered during the value stream mapping observation process.

The tool then becomes a future state mapping tool along with providing teams the ability to explore alternative standard work and line balancing scenarios.

Gary Conner has trained hundreds of companies such as NIKE, Deluxe Corporation, Lockheed Martin, Precision Cast Components, Sandvik Medical Products, FMC, Warn Products, Alberta Canada Department of Employment and Immigration along with hundreds of others in the use of this new value stream mapping technique. These organizations are now in a better position to improve their performance.

Lean Enterprise Training is proud to announce a series of upcoming workshops in the US and Canada.

November 6, 2009     Vancouver BC Canada

December 11, 2009     Portland, Oregon USA

January 8, 2010         Seattle, Washington USA

February 9,  2010      Las Vegas,  Nevada  USA

Gary Conner has trained thousands of people across the US and Canada including direct competitors.  He welcomes competition and invites other Lean Manufacturing consultants and trainers to join this workshop.

This intensive one day training will provide each participant with a fully functioning copy of the software and training on its use.  By way of case studies, examples and samples, each participant will be able to see how this flexible tool will be useful within their unique application.

The price for this full day workshop is $449 and includes a 100 page handout along with all necessary workshop materials including a CD ROM containing the software and other useful tool, files and training videos.

Please consider registering early to ensure your seat(s) is reserved.

Class size will be strictly limited to 50 participants ensuring each participant is afforded the opportunity to receive individualized assistance.

Who should attend?

  • Lean manufacturing coordinators
  • Kaizen promotion office coordinators
  • Black belts
  • Green belts
  • Six sigma disciples
  • Continuous improvement managers
  • Anyone interested in improving their process and profitability

Pre-requisite training:

  • It would be preferred that participants have basic understanding of Microsoft Excel or similar spreadsheet programs.
  • A basic understanding of the Lean Manufacturing concepts (such as takt time, pull systems and flow) is recommended.
  • We encourage you to bring your own laptop if you have one available.
