 2009-10 PROGRAM:

 

The program consists of an opening session of 5-6 hours, seven topical sessions and a closing session of 5-6 hours.  Participants will commit to opening and closing sessions – and actively participate in at least five of the seven topical sessions… if not all seven.  “Homework” between sessions  includes an hour or so of independent work/reading related to the topic of the coming session, an hour or so of independent work/reading related to the leadership strand, and one activity of an hour or two in duration (either independent or with small group) – such as a police ride-along, a visit to the Frisbie emergency room, a tour of an elementary school, attendance at a City Council meeting, etc.

* Focus on secondary school options, attendance laws/dropout data, student engagement, leadership opportunities and school funding, 

* Ongoing leadership strand.

* Focus on structure/role of local government, local taxes, expenditures, services, issues, etc.

* Focus on police, fire, EMS, judicial/court system, correctional system, etc.

* Ongoing leadership strand.

Assignments for May session – something environment-related, something leadership-related, one activity.


Waste Management, 3 to 7 pm

* Focus on carbon emissions, recycling, broad range of issues – from social & business perspectives.

* Ongoing leadership strand.

Closing session/graduation – Friday June 4 - TENTATIVE coordinator: John Shea

Assignments for June session – personal leadership philosophy, priorities, and action plan.

 

Governors’ Inn (?), 1 to 6 or 7 pm (?) – Dave Dubois has lead (with Shea) on firming up site, date, times. 

* Review of the topics/issues covered and of the goals we set in September.
* Wrap up of the leadership strand (a big part of final session) – with individual presentations.

* Concluding team building activities – and individual action plans for next steps (post-LR).

* Graduation/diplomas for successful completion of the program (active participation & no more than one or

   two missed sessions).
