APRIL  27TH WEEKEND: A BUSY TIME!

There are a number of activities happening in town this weekend, and we have committed to a couple of them already. Unfortunately, I will not be in town to supervise them. THis will provide you with an opportunity to earn extra hours by convincing our parents to join in as the supervising adult. For each of the activities below, if your parent comes along, your hours will be DOUBLED. As well, in the spirit of giving, if you bring another, non-leadership student to #1 or #3, you will also qualify for double hours. Please, read on.

1. Friday April 27th: We Team Highway cleanup
This fundraiser for the NUDF asks you to pitch in and help clean a stretch of Highway 16 between PG and Norman Lake. It usually runs from 8am - noon. You will need to wear rubber boots and gloves (supplied) and collect debris from the ditches along the highway. As many students as possible are needed, from 2-10. CONTACT me to confirm.

2. Home Show   April 27, 28 & 29, the hours for the show are: ALL SHIFTS earn 4 hours
•    Friday, 3 pm -9 pm      shifts = 2:30-6 (4 hours) & 6-9:15 (4 hours)
•    Sat, 10 am – 8 pm    10-2, 2-6, 6-8+cleanup
•    Sun, 10 am – 4 pm    10-1, 1-4+ cleanup

I will not be available, but an adult is still required for each shift: If you supply a parent, your hours will be doubled (and they will get to see the show for free

3.  St. Vincent dePaul kitchen on Sunday We've done this before. There is a slight chance the date will be switched to Saturday, but I will confirm and get back to you by this Friday.

Guest Speaker Tuesday Apr. 10th: Mandatory Attendance

posted Apr 8, 2012 10:10 PM by Frank Balazs

There will be a guest speaker at the Ldsp meeting on Tuesday, April 10th. Janice Wharrie will be here to present information about a program sponsored by the YELLOWHEAD ROTARY; it is an opportunity for students to explore possible careers in ALL facets of the forest industry, from manual labourers at the mills, to heavy duty machine operators, to computer programmers, to chemists and scientists, to front office management and even media relations. This program has a "field trip" component in May - a couple of days.

As always, interactions with groups such as the Rotary Clubs can be VERY beneficial for students in many ways - from simple connections that may lead to summer jobs, to broader openings for scholarships and other activities. As well, for the 11s, it could mean valuable connections that can be approached for help in grade 12 with other projects you may have. Since it is BOTH Day 1 (regular grade 12 meeting day) and Tuesday (regular Gr11 meeting day), we will make this lunch hour appointment with Mrs. Wharrie MANDATORY for all Leadership students to attend - even IF you have a double spare and usually miss my class because you go home for lunch. Attendance will be taken.

Have a nice day.

Helping opportunity with RCMP

posted Feb 23, 2012 9:57 AM by Frank Balazs

A reminder for those students who are looking for an opportunity to gain hours, that there is the following opportunity to work with UNBC and the RCMP as they run a project with some of the less fortunate kids in our town. This description is from Mrs. Smith at CHSS:

Basically over 200 kids divided into smaller groups and going around in stations (at UNBC).  We will be taking the kids around different stations at UNBC, talking to them about how important school is.  Basically we are good role models to them and we are sharing with them some things they can do after school instead of going home to empty homes, or homes where no one cares what they do.  This is for 4 of the inner city schools and for kids at high risk.   So we need to share we care.

She/ they are still looking for a few more student mentors for February 28th (Monday). You will get a T-shirt and lunch, but will need to clear it with your classroom teachers. Please let me know by tomorrow morning (Friday) at the latest if you are interested.

As an incentive to encourage multi-grade programming and communication, Grade 12 Ldsp students can earn extra bonus hours by actively including Grade 11 Ldsp students in the planning team! Effective the start of Semester 2, 2012, each Ldsp 12 project leader in a team will be credited with 5 extra service hours IF they actively include at least 2 Ldsp 11 in the planning team. The 11s will have to be included in all meetings and given an equal and substantial part in the project.Any project already underway is also eligible for this bonus.

2nd Opportunity to Help Our Community

posted Jan 23, 2012 8:42 AM by Frank Balazs

Saturday was a very positive experience for the 4 students who accompanied me to serve  breakfast at the  St. Vincent de Paul food kitchen. We provided between 50-65 meals to people who needed it and our efforts were greatly appreciated. We received kind words and jokes the whole morning.

We have another date for breakfast scheduled soon: Saturday, February 11th, from 8:00 - 11:30

Currently volunteering are: Barkha, Brook, Courtney, looking for 3 or 4 more.
