Important Notice relating to Job Action & Extracurriculars @ D.P. Todd
There has been confusion recently around the topic of teacher participation in extracurricular activities at schools in BC during job action and in response to the passing of Bill 22, which severely undermines the abilities of teachers to do their jobs properly and effectively.Teachers in SD 57 have chosen to withdraw their participation in extracurricular activities as a way to express anger over the government's harmful and destructive legislation.
TO be brief: In general, any job action by teachers relating to extracurricular activities does NOT apply to Leadership Program students or to my activities as the supervisor.
Leadership 11 & 12 students organize and execute activities throughout the school year as part of their course work. These activities are "extra" curricular for all other students, but for Leadership students they are very much CURRICULAR, as they are the activities which earn marks. As their classroom teacher, I have the responsibility to supervise their activities or to arrange for an appropriate replacement supervisor. I will attend their functions as the supervisor, BUT NO OTHER teacher is expected to be asked or placed in a position where they feel pressured to step in.
What is Extracurricular for Leadership 11/12 students? Any activity where no marks are given or for which no assessment occurs. This means: no conferences or workshops outside of the school, or external visits that are not for marks. Students will NOT do fundraising activities that are meant to act as a replacement for school funding. *NOTE: charity events and fundraising activities where the money leaves the school will continue.
This will continue for the rest of the 2011/12 school year and resume in September 2012.
