Description:

The Southern Pines Animal Shelter promotes animal welfare and responsible pet ownership in a variety of ways, including:
  • Sheltering lost pets and reuniting them with their owners
  • Finding homes for unwanted pets
  • Educating the community about the problems of unwanted, neglected and abused animals
  • Providing humane care for all animals in our custody
The Southern Pines Animal Shelter is an "open admission" shelter, meaning that no animal is turned away regardless of health, age, or temperament. The Shelter works with the cities of Hattiesburg and Petal to house their stray animals, while also accepting unwanted and lost pets from an 12-county area. (SPAS website)

Volunteer Opportunities:

Students may volunteer at the shelter and take part by playing, walking, or bathing the animals (non-aggressive animals only) or depending on time of volunteering, helping with laundry and cleaning. There are also various fund-raising events, etc. that may need extra volunteers.

Requirements:

There is a simple application, shelter hours are Mon., Wed., Thu., Fri. 10-5; Tues. 10-3; Sat. 10-12, and students must schedule volunteer time in advance (as there is a limit to how many can volunteer per day).

Special Notes:

Observe trained staff's interactions with the animals, be observant of policies and rules, etc, and check with staff before trying to do extra stuff (Southern Pines Staff Member)
