Description: The mission of Junior Achievement of Mississippi, Inc. is to ensure that every child in Mississippi has a fundamental understanding of the free enterprise system. The purpose of Junior Achievement of Mississippi, Inc. is to impact the of young people’s lives by educating and inspiring them to value free enterprise, to understand business and economics, and to be better prepared for the workforce.
The purpose of a JA volunteer is to educate young people about business, economics, and free enterprise through JA programs. Volunteer’s partner with classroom teachers to promote financial literacy, inspire young people to value the free enterprise system, and prepare tomorrow’s workforce. Volunteers not only teach students fundamental business concepts, but also inspire them to reach their greatest potential. The act of volunteering sends a tremendous message of giving back to our communities; the impact on our students will last for the rest of their lives.
Volunteer Opportunities: Students can volunteer in programs with kids ranging from K-12th grade, they will be paired with a K-12th grade teacher in an assigned school in the Pine Belt Area (Hattiesburg, Petal, Oak Grove, Purvis). The programs are as follows: Elementary School ProgramsThe elementary school programs include six sequential themes for kindergarten through fifth-grade students. Students learn the basic concepts of business and economics and how education is relevant to the workplace. The sequential activities build on studies from each preceding grade and prepare students for secondary school and lifelong learning. Middle School ProgramsJunior Achievement has several highly effective programs for middle grades students that reinforce the value of workforce readiness, entrepreneurship, and financial literacy. Students are introduced to many economic concepts and useful facts about the working world. High School ProgramsJunior Achievement's high school programs help students make informed, intelligent decisions about their future, and foster skills that will be highly useful in the business world. With a range of different programs, Junior Achievement teaches concepts relating to entrepreneurship, financial literacy, and work readiness. The volunteers bring real-life business experience and guidance into the classroom at a time of crossroads for young people, and prepare them for a life after high school.
Requirements: Volunteers are asked to attend a one hour training session at which time they receive an overview of the materials needed to teach the lessons. The volunteer will receive a JA program kit containing lesson plans, hand outs, and activities needed to teach the lessons. The kits are teacher friendly, telling you everything you need to say and do. When the classes are over, each volunteer must fill out a short Verification Form stating that you have completed all your classes. The specific program requirements vary from 5, 45 minute class visits with 30-60 min. lesson prep. time to 8, 60 minute class visits with 30-60 min. lesson prep time.
