The community consists of persons of diverse ages, races, and stages of life. The ministry is centered on the commitment to strengthening families and individuals by providing resources and support for growth and by recognizing and meeting special needs (esfcenter.org) Edwards Street is extremely varied and completely volunteer driven. It offers a variety of services to the community from a food pantry, a program for elderly women in the community, they work with Boy Scouts, adolescent girls, offer a summer children's program, and have the Small Miracles Child Development Center which is offered at Court Street Methodist Church for kids aged six weeks to five years. The program for elderly women is held on Wednesday morning and offers lunch, a bible study, and once a month the bible study is replaced with arts, crafts, or some special program. Edwards Street is currently in the process of completing a new building with space for more services and they hope to have it completed sometime in the Fall. Volunteer Opportunities: Students can volunteer with any of the programs Edwards Street offers, working with the Boy Scouts (which may include guiding activities, preparing snacks, one-on-one - especially with younger kids, or helping with active games/exercise times), the elderly women's program (one group spent time with the women then created an artistic poster with life experience quotes they obtained from the participants and gave it to the center, the women loved it), in the food pantry (generally includes sorting food, packing boxes, or taking part in food drives), or at the children's center located at Court Street Methodist. Requirements: A background check is required for anyone volunteering in any capacity with children, but not for the food pantry. If a student volunteers more than 5 hours per week with the preschool they will have a more complete background check done as well as fingerprinting. There is a preliminary interview for all opportunities. They prefer a 'routine' volunteer over someone who just comes in once or twice. Hours - Food Pantry - Thursday and Friday, 1:00-4:00, Court Street Preschool - Monday - Friday, 7:00am - 5:30pm, Varies for the rest, call for more information. |
