Description:
Big Brothers, Big Sisters is a mentoring program designed to increase self-esteem and promote relationships with local kids who are involved in the program.

There is school-based program which is for children aged 5-14, and a community-based program for ages 5-18

Volunteer Opportunities:
Students can volunteer to be a big brother or big sister and may be matched with a student of the same sex either in the school or community based program. The only exception to this rule is that, due to a shortage of male volunteers, female volunteers may be paired with a male participant who is NO farther than 3rd grade.

Requirements:
There is an application as well as an interview process. The interview is usually in-office and takes 15-20 minutes – although for the Fall 2008 semester, Kim Gowdy is considering a mass-interview process on campus before the start of the program (usually around labor day week). Students will need 2 references, and BBBS performs 3 types of background checks.

Time requirements: For school-based – One hour, one day a week – volunteer creates schedule for time. For community-based – 4-6 hours per month, schedule varies.

Special note from Kim Gowdy:

“Really a fun program, don’t be scared of the commitment – they can work it out.The kids really grow attached and it gives the volunteer a chance to make a difference.”
